Hand Slaughter vs. Gunshot Stunning in Canada πππ
As we prepare for Qurbani this Eid, it's important to understand the difference between hand slaughtering and gunshot stunning, especially here in Canada, where both methods are practiced.
πΉ What is Hand Slaughtering?
This is the traditional, Islamic method where the animal is slaughtered by a Muslim, with a sharp knife, while reciting the name of Allah. It ensures the animal is treated with respect and care, and is conscious at the time of the sacrifice, fulfilling the core requirements of halal and Qurbani.
πΉ What is Gunshot Stunning?
This method involves knocking the animal unconscious (typically with a captive bolt gun) before slaughter. While some forms of stunning are permitted under certain Islamic opinions, gunshot stunning is often not considered compliant with Qurbani, as the animal may die before the required sacrifice is made.
π Why It Matters:
For Qurbani to be valid, the animal must be alive at the time of slaughter.
Hand slaughter ensures the spiritual and ethical integrity of the sacrifice.
In many commercial settings, pre-slaughter stunning is the norm, so asking and being informed is crucial.
π£ This Eid, take the time to learn about how your Qurbani is being performed. Make sure it's done with care, compassion, and consciousness of faith.
