It’s not all veggies here at Lovebowl Farm. These Alliums are getting ready to explode into their magical starbursts in the flower beds. Calendula, Borage, Wild Bergamot, Bleeding Heart, Chamomile, Bearded Iris, Lavender, Peonies, Sweet Pea, Gladioli, Lupine, Sunflowers and Lacey Phacelia are keeping them company. The Lilac and Apple Blossoms have appeared just in time for Mother’s Day and the bees are drunk on nectar…

Keeping things cool in the greenhouse is a going concern in this heat! A new misting system on a timer is doing the trick. It’s jam packed with seedlings ready to go into the field over the next few weeks: Tomatoes, Cukes, Squashes, Eggplant, Peppers, Broccolini, Orach, Onions, Shallots, Scallions, Kale, Basil & Shiso, Lettuces, Lovage, Celery, Celeriac, Chard, Cabbages, Cauliflower and more…

The herb nurseries will soon be full of Cilantro, Parsley, Savoury, Mint, Zaatar, Marjoram, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme…

In the field, the first direct seedings are popping: Rainbow Carrots, Astro Arugula, Watermelon Radishes, Russian Blue Potatoes, Hakurei Turnips, Red Bull, Gold and Chioggia Beets for The Clove, Seaside Spinach for the BGC Okanagan - Armstrong Food Bank. The Red Russian Garlic crop is well on it’s way. Pac Choi, French Breakfast Radishes, Salad Mix and Mustard Greens will be seeded up next week.
So many yummy things on the grow…

Some things can’t be explained.
Farming, like Motherhood,
constantly teaches me to look and listen, without always having the quid pro quo of tidy answers. Spring on the farm is full of those kinds of experiences.

Back in March, I seeded up all my alliums in the greenhouse. Sure enough, they popped out within a week. Except for a batch of ROSSA DI MILANO RED ONIONS I sourced through BC Eco Seed Co-op. I waited. Nothing. Waited a bit more. Nothing. Crickets. It happens. Why? Who knows…

So I contacted my pal and fellow bee wrangler, the incomperable Loki, who runs the seed co-op. They were amazing and got another batch out to me pronto. They arrived today. And as I was seeding them up, I noticed that these ones came from a different farm, Sweet Digz Farm.
What???

Flashback to 3 years ago:

In Lovebowl Farm’s first season, I was fortunate enough to be part of the Young Agrarians Business Mentorship program. I was paired up with mentors Kimi & Kareno. Who knew we’d be such a good fit? These incredible women - wickedly funny, smart as hell, wise beyond belief - ran a gorgeous, intuitive, anarchic organic farm in Richmond called Sweet Digz Farm. I couldn’t have possibly imagined how much this mentorship would teach me. Or the friendship that would develop with these beautiful rascals. I honestly don’t know if this farm would have made it to a second season if the mentorship program hadn’t thrown us together that first year.

And today, this replacement package arrives, by chance, with seeds that have been lovingly grown and harvested by my friends and mentors. You two were buzzing all over the greenhouse this evening as I buried your seeds (lightly!). I have a good feeling in my gut that these ones will germinate, be planted in the field and make their way to the many good folks who I grow for. Then again, who knows?

Thank you:
Kimi & Kareno @ Sweet Digz Farm
Melanie @ Young Agrarians
Loki @ BC Eco Seed Co-op.

Some things just happen.
Sometimes, if we just go with it, they turn out to be full of unexpected rewards🤎🌱

Lovebowl Farm shout outs:

-ORACH seeds from Ella at Braden Hill Orchard in Summerland - a wilder alternative to SPINACH. One of the many beautiful seeds I took back to the farm from the Young Agrarians mixer in Penticton. Thanks for your generosity and warmth Ella! These pretty babies are seeded up and will make their way into the SALAD MIXES…

-This hefty horseshoe was a gift from my Caravan Farm Theatre teamster/ferrier pal Craig Nunn. It finally found a home this weekend as a gate pull on the new fence that will protect the heirloom Tomato crops from munching deer. Many folks to thank for this ‘lil fence: Craig (for the shoe), Ken (for post pounding, sturdy hinges and 2x4 braces), Shuswap Fence & Gates (for the roll-end), Jason (for the come-along),
Kristy @ PV BLVD Coffee (for the delish GF choco easter cake I’m devouring right now) and Sweetheart (for swingin hammers, gate building, problem solving and enjoying life with me🤎)

And speaking of local, small businesses in Armstrong along Pleasant Valley Road North need our support. Upcoming road work will make street traffic difficult for a while. Small business rely on walk-in traffic. Let’s help keep our little townie establishments on PV North afloat while the work’s being done:

Grab a daily coffee special and one of Kristy’s gorgeous baked treats at PV BLVD Coffee or a handmade burger at the Armstrong Legion #35,
prowl around the stacks of great books at Bookish Collective, pick up some seedlings for your flower patch at Shepherds Hardware…

Morning at the Shuswap Seed Swap in Enderby, Splatsin Community Centre. An annual spring ritual I look forward to every year. Connecting with seed savers and makers from all over - fills my boots up🌱

Discoveries today:
Enderby Community Garden Society (check out their plans for community initiatives this year), Rhubarb & Lacey Phacelia from the Planting Seeds Project out of Lytton, Rosehip tint botanical lip balm from Wild Earth Medicinals in Revelstoke (‘cause this farmer likes a little lip gloss), smokies sauerkraut and cinnamon buns (sweetheart fave) from Brenda’s Baking - power breakfast - yummm…

Big Lovebowl Farm shout out to Sunshine Farm Seeds in Kelowna for Spectrum Carrots and Okanagan Sunset Beets that are a staple in the field. Been growing out their gorgeous seeds for a few years. And these Rouge Sang Violette Carrots made me swoon - can’t wait to get them in the ground…
