Bbq season feasts!

A whole chicken, parted up, tossed with herbs and garlic and bbq d alongside lamb shoulder steaks and slabs of puffball mushroom. We even bbq the chicken back because they have tons of flavour and lovely bits of meat so it’s tasty eating, and great for the broth pot too.

A deluxe feast for hardworking farmers.

The only sound effect you need is the one of the grill… 🔥

You know that BEEautiful honey that we sell online?
We got to get up close with the hives this morning to help Emily get some queen bee grafts placed in hives.
Because is primarily a bee breeder business they are focused on growing healthy hives, propagating good, resilient genetics that are well adapted to the Okanagan.
Honey is a bonus that comes from hearty hives placed in healthy environments, primarily on organic farms.
The hum of buzzing bees, and the beautiful insects to look at were a treat on this Sunday.
You can order raw Okanagan honey alongside your meats and eggs anytime!

Moving to virtual fencing with the .na eShepherd collars has been a major step for the farm this spring.

Lots to learn in terms of how the paddocks can be adjusted and updated, and also a learning curve in terms of fitting and adjusting the collars themselves - how often it needs to be done and what the best fit is for the comfort and safety of the cattle.

Good cattle handling facilities make it a lot safer and less stressful for both the cattle and the humans. This chute from that includes a squeeze, scale, and tub is the most significant investment we have made in the farm this year. It has the added benefit of being mobile so we can hook onto it and use it at both farms where we have herds of cattle rather than trying to maintain two sets of equipment.

We shipped cattle this morning, which is also an opportunity to put the whole herd through the squeeze to check how tight the collars are and adjust as they grow. This will be a regular activity on the farm through the grazing season, especially when the grass is growing so fast (and so are the cattle!)

This is a snapshot of how the cattle are handled and how collars are adjusted. A bit of head tossing aside the morning of sorting, adjusting collars and shipping cattle all went smoothly. This afternoon the yearlings will be added to the herd of steers that have been sorted so we will have one grazing group on this farm in collars and one group of heifers on another farm grazing with electric fences.

Stay tuned as the grass grows and the days lengthen!

Shoutout to Organic BC!

These folks work hard, often times behind the scenes and almost always with limited resources, but they stand up for Organic farmers and the integrity of organic food, which provides important CHOICE for consumers who are looking to support ecological management and farming that is free of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It is often a thankless job, so just sending a little thank you from our certified organic pig pasture.

Much of our new leased farmland was logged, and then not replanted nor was it turned into farmland, though it is what would be considered arable land in the Okanagan, and is within the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Through a process of multi-species, rotational grazing we are establishing perennial forage mixes.

In this field the process started in 2023 with the rotation of pigs through what was then a marginal pasture. We followed the pigs with a seeding of cover crop and clover, and it is now a mostly perennial pasture where the cattle are grazing with their new E Shepherd collars.

Watching the landscape transform slowly into productive pasture and a thriving habitat is very rewarding, and while learning to work with the eShepherd collars is an ongoing process, the potential benefits for land stewardship are vast.

Lemony Greek-inspired roasted potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes, asparagus, and lamb shoulder steaks. This spring meal was 👌 and it was also pretty quick to make. Starting the potatoes stovetop with lemon juice and chicken broth was key for flavour and quickness. Everything roasted at 426, and I added the asparagus in on top of the steaks when they were nearly done.

Feel free to also comment on and admire my incredible cinematography skills. One handed and full oven steam
