Back in the winner's circle at the Battle River Brewers annual IPA-only competition with a gold for my hazy IPA and bronze for my brown IPA. This was a nice surprise - there are always only four tables at this small competition and only 12 medals awarded total. Thanks to the club for hosting and thanks to my club for the support. It feels great to score some points again after the minor setback at the last comp. On to the next one!

The medals and prizes from have arrived. Got my gold for the schwarzbier and silver for the hazy IPA. A big thanks to the club for hosting a great competition with very helpful and detailed feedback on the scorecards from all the judges. Even though I got absolutely destroyed on a couple of entries, it's a huge help when the judges are so specific about what needs to be fixed and even go as far as suggesting ways to improve subsequent batches of that beer. Another huge thanks to my home club for all of the ongoing support with these competitions. The drywall in my basement brewery is starting to get a bit heavy from all this hardware 😂.

New batch of "BIG Krush!" (Hazy IPA) on tap. This recipe is still number one for me out of all the hazies I've done so far. Might have to scale it up to a full keg one of these months.

Did a thing today. Spoiler: it was brewing - specifically my first ever pro/am collab batch at . It was a lot of fun. A huge thanks to Andrew for hosting me and bringing this recipe to a much larger scale than my tiny stovetop batches. This is gonna be a banger of a beer. Stay tuned for more details when the time comes. 🤘🍺

"Seeing Red" 2026 batch review: Yeah...this is much better. I revised the red IPA recipe for 2026 (and by revised, I mean a complete overhaul) and it paid off. This seems much more to style in terms of taste/aroma and looks the part. Nice clean bitterness, hop flavour and aroma coming through, and it's clearing up nicely. Ditching the red x malt and going traditional was the right call. We'll see how this one does in comps...

Results are in from Edmonton: 🥇GOLD for my new batch of schwarzbier and 🥈SILVER for my latest hazy IPA. Very happy to see the consistency between batches for those ones - that will let me focus on tweaking all the other recipes that need improvement. A big thanks to for hosting a great competition and to my club for their ongoing support. Our club also scored second overall. Congrats to all the winners. On to the next one!

I brewed a small batch of what could be the new marzen recipe. I made a lot of changes at once to the usual recipe (something I usually advise against), but if this works well, I'm scaling it up for a regular sized batch sometime in the fall. New yeast, new mash schedule, different water chemistry, and slight changes to the grain bill. Here's hoping it works. 🤞

My updated batch of "Choshek" is now on tap. This time, it's definitely a tropical stout. Glad I gave it another go - this thing is crushable.

My first maibock (helles bock) is all carbed up and ready for consumption. I'm very happy with how it turned out and I'm planning to make this a regular recipe to brew each year. It's very malt forward and cleared up nicely in the keg.
