What are physiotherapists actually asking about osteoporosis in clinical practice? 🦴

During our recent Osteo-Circuit course, participants brought forward questions about exercise prescription, fractures, movement, spinal conditions, jumping and hopping, and translating evidence into individualized patient care.

And these conversations are an important part of Osteo-Circuit.

It’s not only about learning the evidence — it’s about discussing how to apply it when a real patient is standing in front of you.

We collected 10 of the questions that came up during the course, and now we want to hear from you:

Which one would you like Bonny to answer first? Comment the number below. 👇

Can you stand on one leg?

Standing on one leg is a simple exercise that can improve your balance.

If you feel unsteady, stand near a stable surface such as a table or chair. Keep one hand on it for support.

If you have osteoporosis, good balance can help reduce the chance of falls and broken bones.

So many of our staff at Pro Motion Physiotherapy took her courses! Wonderful to see she is continuing to share her knowledge and expertise!

At 89 years young, Dr. Shirley Sahrmann is still doing what she does best- teaching and inspiring the next generation of physical therapists. ❤️

Our DPT learners recently had the opportunity to learn directly from Dr. Sahrmann, whose knowledge, experience and contributions to the physical therapy profession have influenced generations of clinicians.

We are incredibly fortunate to have her continue to share her expertise, challenge our thinking and help shape the future of physical therapy right here at WashU Medicine❤️

Thanks for sharing! And I appreciate how you suggest an exercise and then show a person in excellent alignment performing it! All about the right exercise, with the right technique, at the right time, with the right person! And after that, the right progression that is tailored to the person! Thanks again!

With autumn here, it's a great time to get moving and work on your balance.

Simple exercises can help you feel steady and make your muscles stronger. If you have osteoporosis, improving your balance may help reduce your chance of slips, trips and falls that could lead to broken bones.

Try movements such as:

- sitting to standing

- standing on one leg

- heel raises (lifting your heels up and down)

- toe raises (lifting your toes up and down)

Find out how to do these exercises and more in our balance video and webpage:

Great article on importance of tailored balance exercises and really like your progression examples! And, agree that people should see their Physiotherapist if they have had a fracture, pain or any condition that affects their ability (or confidence) to safely do balance exercises. Thanks again!

Looking for a simple way to improve your balance?

Balance exercises, such as standing on one leg and heel raises, can help keep you steady.

This is especially important if you live with osteoporosis because falls can lead to broken bones.

Don’t let fear of movement take away the things you love.

Travel. Garden. Walk. Play with your grandchildren. Stay independent.

The goal isn’t simply stronger bones — it’s helping you keep doing the things that matter to you.

Be careful with what you see on the internet. Some exercises may be very appropriate for building bone and muscle strength but they must be done in good alignment with a netural spine.

Start low. Go slow. Keep going. đź’™
