Crab Apple Farm is a small-scale vegetable farm nestled in the woods of Cape Breton Island - dedicated to growing fresh produce using organic practices.

We harvested our first potatoes of the season today, and they're now available from the farm.

This year's crop includes two early-season varieties:
🥔 Warba - creamy and perfect for boiling or roasting
🥔 Red Fingerling - buttery with a firm texture that's excellent roasted or pan-fried.

You'll find them at the Baddeck Farmers' Market, the Margaree Market, and in our online farm shop while they last.

Both our green and red noodle beans are now available!

You can find them through the Cape Breton Food Hub's online store (link in bio) or order directly from our website for pickup at the farm.

Also known as yard beans or asparagus beans, we harvest ours when they're about 12-18 inches long, while they're still young and tender. They have a mild flavour that's perfect for stir-fries, pickling, steaming, or sautéing.

They're one of the more unusual vegetables we grow, and they're well worth trying if you've never had them before 🙂

🌶️ The first peppers of the season are here!

These peppers have been a long time coming. We started them from seed back in February, transplanted them into the greenhouse in April, and now the first harvest is finally ready.

We're now harvesting green bell peppers, green chili peppers, and jalapeños.

Still to come later this summer are striped hot peppers, sweet and fruity Sugar Rush Peach peppers (our favourite variety), and ripe red chili peppers.

We'll be updating our website each week as more crops come into season.

We've started working on a new addition to the farm this season - outdoor mushroom logs 🍄

We recently inoculated a dozen logs with 2 pounds of shiitake and enoki mushroom plugs. Most won't begin producing until next year, but we're hoping to have a small harvest later this season.

Enoki are our favourite type of mushroom, and we've always had a hard time finding them here on the island. This variety comes from Manitoba, so we're hoping it will be well suited to Nova Scotia's climate.

We harvested our first ripe cherry tomatoes from the greenhouse this morning and there are lots more on the way. We're growing a few different colours this year: yellow, orange, red, and purple.

The start of tomato season is always a good day 🙂 🍅
