It’s time to gear up! The North Hastings Community Fish Hatchery is proud to sponsor the 6th Annual Pike Derby on Saturday, July 4, 2026. This event is a cornerstone of our efforts to promote active stewardship and improve the health and balance of the Baptiste Lake fishery.

We have an exciting update for this year: a brand new category for Top Angler! This new award joins our existing $1,800.00 cash prizes for the largest fish and top total weight.
With over 100 anglers and 200 spectators expected, it will be an incredible day supporting a vital cause. Please see the attached event poster for full details.
Event Highlights:
· NHCFH and Baptiste Lake Sponsorship: All proceeds support our hatchery’s conservation and lake balance initiatives.
· New Category: Top Angler Title allows one successful angler to stand out.
· Cash Prizes: Significant purses designed to attract participants. $1,800.00 paid to 6 places.
· Door Prizes: At weigh-in there will be door prize drawings and games to add to the weigh-in excitement.
· Registration Limit: To ensure a quality experience, entry is limited to the first 75 boats.

It's our 20th anniversary! What started as a small fundraiser has become the must-attend community happening of the summer. With the retirement of our kitchen manager after 19 years of dedicated support, the NHCFH is actively looking to secure a new kitchen manager for this year's Summer Fish Fry & Pig Roast Dinner being held at the Bancroft Curling Club on July 11, 2026. Key qualifications and duties include:
Experience in a kitchen manager role, sous chef, or similar role, ideally managing staff for larger events.

Holding a valid Food Handler Certificate, issued by the Ontario Ministry of Health within the last 5 years and to have this certificate available for inspection on site during the 3 days leading up to and including the day of the event.

Available to oversee the kitchen operations for a charity event with 300+ attendees on July 11, 2026.

Managing the receipt and proper storage of food inventory arriving on the Thursday prior to the event.

Assisting with staff schedules for kitchen operations from July 10-11, training volunteer staff as required and overseeing the preparation and serving of food at the event, ensuring both quality and consistency while enforcing strict adherence to safety protocols and cleanliness standards of the local Health Department.

Coordinating the bussing of tables and cleaning of dishes and kitchen equipment to bring them back to their original state.

Available to participate in planning meetings leading up to the event.

Dedicated on site availability for Thursday July 9 (approx. 1 hour), Friday July 10 (approx. 6 hours) and Saturday July 11(approx. 9 hours).

If you believe you have both the qualifications and availability to help with this great event, please forward your resume along with an introductory cover letter to Kevin Vance at [email protected].

With tremendous community support, we did it! We have exceeded our target of $30,000, with a wave of donations coming in this past week to put us at just shy of $32,500.

Contributions through Foodland’s promotion of the campaign and other donations are expected to flow in over the next week or two- but we wanted to share this great news and to thank you for making it happen.

Achieving this goal with 2 weeks left in the campaign reinforces the importance of the work we do at the Hatchery and the shared support for environmental stewardship and conservation awareness in the region.

We are entering into week 4 of the well campaign and are sitting at $18,875 raised to-date. This represents ~63% of our target, and while we are making good progress, we need everyone's help in getting us to our overall goal of $30,000. This new well is critical for the Hatchery to secure a dependable water source and allow us to continue supporting local fish populations.

Special thanks to our most recent donors, including:

Exciting News: New Prize Structure for the 2026 Baptiste Pike Derby! 🎣

We’ve heard the community feedback, and we are thrilled to announce a brand-new way to win this year!

To ensure the competition is fair and rewarding for everyone—whether you’re fishing with a full crew or heading out solo—we are introducing the Top Angler category.

With the dedicated work of our committee, led by Cain Dagenais and Kevin Vance, we have developed a structure that levels the playing field for boats with fewer people.

2026 Cash Prize Categories:
• Big Fish (Individual): The heaviest single pike of the derby. This prize is open to everyone across all categories!
• Top Angler (Individual): Most total weight for 6 fish caught by a single angler.
• Top Boat (Team): Most total weight for the boat. We will be paying out cash for the Top 4 Places in this category!

How It Works:
To keep things fair and streamlined, participants must choose their path at the weigh-in:

1. Declare Your Category: At the scale, you must declare if you are competing in the Top Angler (Individual Weight) or the Top Boat (Team Weight) category. You cannot enter both.
2. The Big Fish Rule: Your "Big Fish" entry counts toward your total weight in whichever category you choose, and it remains eligible for the overall Big Fish cash prize regardless of your category.

Our goal is to make the 6th Annual Derby the most inclusive and competitive one yet while continuing our mission to balance the Baptiste Lake ecosystem.

Ready to claim your title? Register your boat now to secure your 7:00 AM push-off!

Huge thanks to Cain and Kevin for their leadership in refining these rules. See you all on the water July 4th!
