Ehrenholz Farms

Ehrenholz Farms Welcome to Ehrenholz Farms! We love supplying our community with delicious local food. Check out what we have to offer today! We raise beef cattle and vegetables.

Ehrenholz Farms was established in the community of Lawton in 1952 and has been owned and operated by one Ehrenholz or another since that time. We think that locally produced food is an important part of a strong community, so we sell farm-raised beef and vegetables and enjoy introducing our friends and customers to agriculture.

The farm got a new bull today!

He's a Galloway-Simmental cross from Alberta Plaid Galloway and he's been serenading the nearby cow herd from the time he arrived this morning!

His name is Nigel.

See that little red calf, with her tail swinging wildly behind her?

She and I had an experience we'd both like to forget today.

Warning: Gross content ahead

This little calf p**ped, probably in her sleep, and the p**p got stuck between her tail and her bum. In case you're unaware, calf p**p is sticky. That sticky p**p then dried in place, glue her tail to her bum. The more she p**ped throughput the day, the worse the situation got.

I had a few urgent things to take care of today, but once I finished those, the next thing on the list was getting this little calf cleaned up.

I dragged an old, cracked water trough into the alleyway, brought out some warm soapy warm, then caught the calf.

She wasn't happy about standing in the tub or about the water being poured over her tail. She especially disliked me scrubbing at her back end, but we slowly made headway.

The calf wiggled and squirmed, I maneuvered and scrubbed, and her mother bellowed what were probably bovine obscenities at me from the other side of the fence.

Finally, her tail was completely free and her back end was all cleaned up. I returned the calf to her mother, turned back to the tub, and remembered I hadn't gotten a picture. Oh well.

The project known as "Replace the Gate before the Steers Break Out" is now complete (pending bovine approval).

Usually projects like this are left for later in the summer, between haying and harvest, or when we're waiting for a recent dump of rain to dry up. This particular project was getting pretty urgent, thanks to the steers' continual scratching on the fragile old wooden gate, so we snuck it in today during calving and planting season.

One of our old, wooden gates has been slowly breaking apart this spring. Today we finally have time to replace it with a new metal gate.

Of course, we are working under strict supervision from the steers.

Bruce the Bull got himself into a SITUATION this morning.

My best guess for what happened is that I wasn't fast enough bringing a new bale of hay, so he stuck his head into the bottom of the bale feeder, got his head stuck (because heads aren't supposed to go in the bottom), flipped the feeder upside down, and backed himself into a corner.

Dad had to use the grinder to cut away a metal rod and then Bruce was able to calmly pull his head out and stroll away like nothing had happened.

What a bull.

I had to fix a bit of fence this morning and this curious cow decided go "help" by carefully inspecting my tools, wire, staples, and work. I think the completed fence met her standards. She's a little hard to read.

Remember that calf that was lost yesterday and ended up hiding on the manure pile? She got lost again today. All afternoon, she was nowhere to be found.

And again, her mom marched up to me and stared into my soul, silently demand that I fix it. She didn't even try mooing for her calf.

I checked the pens and pasture, including the manure pile, but couldn't find the calf. I'm in the middle of a calving explosion (15% of the herd calved in less than 48 hours), so I didn't have time to search hard, and the calf hadn't been missing long.

Mama was going to have to try to find her own calf.

By evening, the calving explosion had calmed down and the calf was still missing. I was walking through the herd when I spotted two cows staring intently at something just across the fence. I climbed through the wires and went to investigate.

It was grass. They were staring at grass. 🤦‍♀️ BUT, while I was standing there being annoyed, I heard a calf blare out in the pasture, beyond where the cows currently are. And then the cow with the missing calf mooed back in the same direction. And there it was again - a calf calling for it's mama.

I struck out in the direction of the sound and eventually found the calf lying by a rock pile, quite some distance from the fence her mother was behind. So, I chased her back to her mother and all is well again.

Hopefully by tomorrow, this pair will have learned to stick together better.

It's never a good feeling to see a cow who just calved yesterday hustling over to me with no calf, a full udder, and a "Help me, Farmer" look in her eye.

This afternoon, my favourite cow did exactly that while I was looking for new calves in the pasture. Once I had finished checking for newborns, I looked everwhere for the unique white-faced calf I just ear-tagged this morning.

After a while of searching, I happened to glance at the manure pile and there she was!

The calf must have climbed up there and then wasn't sure how to get back down. Once I climbed up to fetch her down, her fear of me overwhelmed her fear of heights and she carefully scrambled down.

Both mother and baby are doing well. I'm hoping they avoid the manure pile from now on.
