I get the question “Do you raise and sell POL Pullet hens?” ALOT!
I’m going to break down why I don’t do this as a small farm…
Costs - everything I purchase is at retail : from their feed, power to keep the chicks warm, incubation and incubator maintenance, the bedding materials, housing/brooder upkeep, my fuel going to town to pick these things up etc… plus the work load is immense and my labor should not be expected for free 😒
I also have to factor in that I am not trained to vent s*x day old chicks (this is a very niche specialty profession, that takes years of training and experience to do) so 51% +/- are going to hatch as MALES, the rooster chicks have to be reared along with the Pullet chicks as I raise breeds that are not typically s*x-linked at hatching, which means 6-10 weeks before I am confident to say with 100% certainty on genders by visual experience.
Then I also have to dispatch the roosters as a convenience to the Pullet buyers - which is not a job any farmer would consider enjoyable with chicks you have hand reared that long.
In total for a Pullet heritage breed chick to raise it to that 8-10 week old age, then the buyer would have to rear them another 10 weeks or so to laying age- I’d be looking at charging $75-$100/10 wk old pullet depending on breeds, and that amount most people are not willing to pay unfortunately…
So no, I don’t and will never offer s*xed Pullet chicks to the public from my flocks, unless the Pullets I do grow out are not worthy enough for my breeding flock.
Sexed Pullet chicks for cheap is for the commercial hatchery to do. If you want s*xed Pullets call the commercial hatchery, if you want the highest quality healthiest heritage breed uns*xed chicks, contact me or another heritage poultry breeder 😉
