🐂 Our newest employee has officially clocked in! 🤠

We’ve welcomed a handsome Red Angus bull from Mitchell Cattle Company to The Canny Crofter for a very important temporary assignment.

Job Description:
❤️ Woo the ladies.
🌾 Eat hay.
😎 Look ridiculously handsome.
🐮 Leave us with a pasture full of healthy calves next spring.

The girls have been checking out the new guy, and he doesn’t seem too bothered by all the attention. We’d say he’s settling into his new job just fine!

A big thank you to Mitchell Cattle Company for trusting us with one of their bulls. We’re excited to see what next year’s calf crop has in store!

🌱 A Little Farm Experiment! 🐑

I’ve been thinking a lot about ways to make better use of the resources we already have on the farm. Instead of letting lower-grade wool go to waste, I’m curious whether it can actually help improve our dry, sandy pasture.

Over the next several weeks, I’m setting up a small experiment right here on the farm. I’ll be comparing four different treatments on established pasture:

🌾 Control (no amendments)
🌿 Composted livestock manure and bedding
🐑 Raw wool
🌱 Composted livestock manure and bedding + raw wool

Each plot will receive the exact same amount of water every day, and I’ll be tracking soil moisture, grass growth, colour, and overall plant health. My hope is to learn whether wool can help hold moisture in the soil and whether it works even better when paired with composted livestock manure and bedding.

If it works, it could be a great way to give new life to wool that isn’t suitable for spinning while improving soil health and pasture productivity.

I’ll be sharing photos, measurements, and updates as the experiment progresses. I’m excited to see what we learn!

Last night I realized my cow, Dela, was getting ready to calve, so naturally I stayed up until midnight waiting for a baby… nothing.

Got back up at 4:30 a.m… still no baby. The last two calves, she has shown signs the night before and there has been a beautiful baby by the time I check in the wee hours of the day! Not this time!

I went ahead and did chores, fed all the animals, and kept checking on her the whole time. She was definitely getting close — walking lots and looking more uncomfortable by the hour. Around 8:00 a.m. she finally started laying down between pacing, and I could tell things were finally happening.

I had to fight every instinct not to bring her into the small pen and check what was going on, but I’m so glad I trusted her because she was an absolute superstar.

She pushed for maybe 20 minutes and had that baby out with zero problems — a beautiful bull calf! Born at just before 9:00 am and up and nursing in less than 20 minutes like he’d done it before.

She has always calved overnight before, so I’ve usually just come out to find a cleaned-up calf already standing and nursing. Waiting through the whole process this time had my anxiety sky high, but the second that calf hit the ground and I knew he was alive and healthy, all that stress disappeared instantly.

Very proud of this mama today ❤️

Wendy & Dela Spring Update 🌱🐄

Wendy and Dela have been soaking up these beautiful spring days and making the most of the sunshine.
They’ve been enjoying the fresh air, warm breezes, and carefully inspecting the pasture… still waiting (very impatiently) for the grass to grow!

Wendy is really starting to look all grown up now — it’s hard to believe how much she’s changed already. Dela, of course, is keeping a close eye on everything and making sure the pasture meets her standards.

One thing is for sure… unlike the sheep, these two would absolutely NOT be caught wearing bunny ears for Easter. Not a chance. Not even a little bit. 🐰🚫

They’ll stick to looking majestic and waiting for grass, thank you very much.

And that’s a wrap on lambing 2026! 🐑🌸

Freya added a beautiful lamb to round out our lamb crop to 41 total… and yes… it’s a boy! 💙

That means the final scoreboard is in:
23 boys 💙
18 girls 💗

The boys took the win this year, but wow — what a stunning group of ewe lambs the girls gave us! Strong, beautiful, and full of personality. We couldn’t be happier with this year’s lamb crop.

A huge congratulations to all our hardworking mamas (and especially Freya for closing out the season in style). Now it’s time for warm spring days, growing lambs, and a little bit more sleep for the shepherd. 🌿☀️
