Bayfield Lavender Farm

Bayfield Lavender Farm The products that the farm produces are all made by hand using as many organic, ethically, and locally sourced ingredients as possible. "

Bayfield Lavender Farm is a small-scale farm naturally, sustainably growing lavender plants with a large part of the focus on fostering more robust habitat for pollinators. Harvested by hand and working in small batches, the farm’s French and English lavenders are steam distilled for essential oil and valuable hydrosols while some English varieties are also dried for culinary use. Located just out

side of Bayfield (Ontario), the farm has been open seasonally to visitors since 2023: people come to relax in the surrounding gardens, shop handcrafted lavender products in the rustic farm shop, and participate in a number of workshops and events on offer. The Farm’s Mission: “Bayfield Lavender Farm strives to provide a place of tangible calm and beauty in an increasingly fast-paced digitizing world.

Things will be a bit different at the lavender farm this Summer: The farm will not be open to the public in the same way it has been for the past three wonderful years. We will still be hosting special events in June and July which I will roll out over the next few weeks (stay tuned!). The online shop will still be active… most of the time.

Why will our season be shaped this way? Life has thrown a me a curveball.

My dear Father is sick: A very aggressive cancer has taken hold of his body and it’s become clear that there is only a limited time left to spend together. Being an only child, I want to make that time as flexible as I can for him. Since the farm is also our home, I want to give our family the space and quiet that we will need in the coming months. This has all been a shock, completely unexpected…and though I deeply value the community that has thrived in our gardens over the past few Summers, I can’t reliably provide the welcome that sustains it this year.

The farm itself will still be active: We’ll still be growing, harvesting, and distilling lavender. I will still be making product from our beautiful plants. We will still be raising goats and collecting goat milk for my handcrafted lavender soap. We will still host a handful of professional photo shoots and special gatherings with Cork & Coast, with Dybosia, and with The Den.

I will still try to post pictures of blossoms and sunsets, video of baby goats and ridiculous chickens. I promise.

I’m so grateful to all of you who have fallen in love with the farm, and I look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Thank you for your understanding.

Love.

(Thanks for this beautiful photo 💜)

The lavender plants are dormant and resting underneath the snow, while above ground the winds off the lake are relentless. The snow drifts continue to accumulate, the roads continue to close. And yet.

This past week, while starting to lose my mind between blizzards, I’ve noticed the light lingering just a bit longer in the late afternoon. The sun is climbing incrementally each day. Under the endless snow, the bulbs are already preparing themselves.

This is a moment in time where, despite my best efforts, my mind is spiralling…I know I’m not alone in that. I must constantly remind myself that Winter is the season of Trust. Trust that the Earth remembers what to do, that WE remember what to do. Trust that after every contraction comes expansion. Trust that dormancy is not the same as gone.

This is just a reminder to me (and to you if you need) to do whatever you need to do to stay mentally strong during this somewhat isolating, challenging season. Actually take care of yourself: Be your own nagging, loving mother. Make yourself laugh, read yourself books, make actual phone calls to the people you love. Maybe find a good place to scream into the void if that’s what you need. We’ve got to stay grounded for each other, it’s the key to keeping our elbows up.

Spring will come. It obviously always does. And when it does, it will feel like the first time all over again—that blush of green, those early brave little blooms, the return of birdsong in the morning air, the smell of soil waking up… beginning again. We’re almost there.

Coco Love Alcorn, my dear sister from another mister is in need of community support. Coco is a beautiful human, extraordinary vocalist, songwriter and musician, a loving mother, partner, friend, and has possibly the biggest most generous heart in our family. If you have a moment, please follow this link to read her story and consider a donation.

Hi Everyone, This month, we received devastating news: our dear frien… Emily Stupple needs your support for Help Support Coco Through Her Cancer Journey

I’m very appreciative to The Huron Citizen and Scott Stephenson for making space this week to chat with me about recently being recognized by the Organic Council of Ontario as a Pollinator Protector.

It means a tremendous amount to me to be able to work with nature rather than push against it, fostering a reciprocal relationship with the land we live on. Always learning.

To have this moment of recognition fills my heart.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Abundance Cookbook, thoughtfully curated and beautifully put together by the United Way. The book is a gorgeous keepsake featuring over 40 recipes and stories from farms, restaurants, and small businesses all over Huron County.

I’m really looking forward to trying out the Chicken Liver Pate from The Little Inn, the Harvest Vegetable Salad from Part II Bistro, Bacon & Egg Brioche from Shopbike, Green Cold-Pressed Juice from The Den, and SO many more… the perfect winter project will be eating our way through this book. You can find my recipe for Lavender Brownies in the dessert section.

The proceeds from the sale of each cookbook will be re-invested into the local community: a meaningful gift idea for the upcoming holiday season.

Thank you to Michelle and Kim from the United Way and the whole team behind this project:  It’s such a beautiful love letter to Huron County.

Thank you so much to Bayfield Lavender Farm for their generous donation of gift bags for each of the women currently staying in our shelter and Second Stage Housing!

Lavender ties in beautifully with our new identity - it's said to be a gift from Artemis and is often associated with femininity, healing, and calm. Its soothing qualities make it a lovely gesture of support for these women during their transition. 💜
