I know that beekeeping seems like it's all glitz and glamour, red carpet events and livin' large.... But sometimes you just gotta cut the grass.

I wasn't risking it, I didn't want to get stung... But the girls were actually really chill while I was doing this. 🍻

Hello again!

Beekeeping season is well underway! I got out to the hives last week and had a peek.

I was happy to see things mostly in order. I had a few really strong colonies and a few that were struggling a little bit.

To even things out a bit and give the weaker colonies a leg up I moved some resources around. The biggest thing the weaker colonies were needing was a larger workforce, so I took some capped brood from the strongest colonies and gave it to them. The larvae will pupate while they are capped and emerge as adult bees about 11 days after capping. These adult bees will help them immensely.

Also, as usual, there's a few pics of queen bees doing their thing. Not always required but it is nice to spot them. They really are quite lovely.

Updates to follow. ☺️

Out with the old, in with the new.

The older smokers wear their work proudly — heat-blued steel, darkened patina, dents earned honestly in the bee yard. They’ve calmed colonies and seen more honey flows than most of us can count. The new stainless model? Clean, efficient, ready to build its own history.

Smoke isn’t about force — it’s about finesse. A few cool puffs, a little patience, and the hive settles. Respect the bees, move slow, and let experience do the talking.
Old school. New school. Same craft. 🍯🐝

Hey guys, we're really looking forward to the WellDone Christmas Makers Market tomorrow! We're going to be hanging out with some really cool people who make really cool things and it's going to be a great place to pick up some local Christmas gifts. We'll be there from 11-4pm slinging our wares at the Bank Art House, 22 king st in Welland.

This year we've decided to donate 10% of our proceeds from the market to Community Care Niagara. Just our little way to say thank you to everyone and show our pride in the community.

Hope to see you there. 🐝

CALLING ALL MOUSTACHE MEN;

We're looking for a handful of rogues and rebels to help us out!

Using beeswax straight from our own hives, we've been crafting a small-batch moustache wax and we're looking for a few testers to give us some honest feedback.

If you’ve got a ’stache and want to help shape a grooming product made right here in Beamsville, Ontario, drop me a message or comment below. You’ll get a free sample tin in exchange for a few minutes of feedback.

Limited spots — looking for a handful of testers only. Let’s tame those whiskers with Rogue Honey Co's hive-powered wax!

Got out to see my bees today. It's been a bit stressful with the collarbone fracture at the start of the season, worrying about being able to keep things on track.

I was able to do some splits a couple weeks ago. I made a post and showed the queen's introduced to those splits. Today I was looking to check up on those colonies and make sure the queen's were accepted, laying and everything was going well.

Fortunately, everything went according to plan!

In the pictures, from left to right;

1️⃣ Eggs. Eggs are an easy way to confirm you have a laying queen! Eggs will turn into larvae after 3 days so if you have eggs you know the queen is around. Notably, the eggs are smaller than a grain of rice and I usually have to tilt the frame to the sun so I can get a good look in there.

2️⃣ after 3 days the eggs will hatch into larvae. At first they will be tiny but the worker bees will feed them and they start growing very quickly! We can tell from this picture the pattern the queen was laying in as the larvae grow in size. Pretty neat.

3️⃣ At day 9 the workers will put a wax capping on the cell that contains the larva. The larvae have had enough to eat at this point and will begin pupate. As pupae they will transform from little grubs into bees!

4️⃣ This frame is all fully capped and at day 21 the bees will emerge as fully formed adult bees. These bees will provide vigor to the colony, allowing them to collect more resources and protect those resources as well. After the bees emerge they will clean out their cells and the queen will soon lay new eggs in those cells, repeating the process.

SO, as you can see, things are happening in the colonies as they should. Thanks for checking it out.
