It is almost that time…

Farm Share program members will be able to pick up their week 1 Farm Share basket Thursday through Saturday (May 21st - 23rd) between 10:00-5:00.

Here is a sneak peek of what will be in our first farm share of the 2026 season.

Procyshyn heirloom Green Garlic - A versatile staple in the spring kitchen, we like to slice it thin and use it raw in our salads. Can be used like a green onion or sautéed like storage garlic. No need to for any waste because fibrous leaves and the roots are key in a delicious broth.

Bacchus Radishes - Fresh, juicy, crunchy, starts earthy sweet and finishes with a hint of spice… What’s not to love? Raw on a salad, sautéed in a stir fry or roasted in the oven, you will not be disappointed.

Bopak Bok Choy - One of our favourite Asian greens that we cultivate. Obviously it is a cornerstone in a stir fry and we also like to sauté it in our cast iron with other greens like spinach, chard and Kale and of course green garlic

Red Tabby Spinach - Healthy, rich, creamy and packed with vitamins and nutrients. The iron horse in our kitchen and a natural anti inflammatory. Steamed, sautéed whatever, get it in ya.

Butter Crisp Salad Blend - Everyone’s favourite salad blend. A mix of butter head, frisée, and oak leaf lettuces, triple rinsed and ready to use. Refreshing, light, healthy and convenient.

Red Gem head lettuce - Dense, firm, and fresh, we often use this healthier lettuce head in replacement of a standard romaine for Caesar salad. Also dynamite on burgers and sandwiches.

Bon appetite!

BIG thank you, to everyone who came out to enjoy our open house! It was our most prosperous day to date!

It was a a great success, you have all brought us closer to our goal of being a small farm with a BIG environmental impact.

- You guys are absolutely amazing and thank you for being the first of many special guests!

It was delightful, to say the least, to see lots of familiar faces, as well as many new ones. The love we hold for our local environment and this community is contagious and is spreading like wildfire…

We are opening our Farm Store for the season Thursday May 15th.

We will be open 10:00-5:00 Thursday, Friday and Saturday weekly for the entirety of the season.

We have narrowed down the days we are open, that way we can better focus on our production so you all have diverse and abundant choices while visiting our little farm.

Furthermore, we are working on starting a small, local artisan/farm market onsite for Saturday mornings (10:00-2:00). This is not in stone yet but we would love some feedback in the comments from the community, to see if this is something that peaks interest?
Please, let us know what you think in the comments and share this with anyone who you think might enjoy the return of a Beamsville farm market! (Vendor or attendee)

In closing we would like to again sincerely thank everyone who has been supportive of this land stewardship journey we have been on. With all of your support we are improving the health of our neighbours, our local environment and our local economy together…
As a community should!

Thank you kindly for everything you all share
Especially…

Chefs, fellow farmers, neighbours, friends and community members, we are inviting you to join us for our open house to kick off the season here at Substrata farm.

What this means?

We will have the freshest, grown onsite, organic produce around available for purchase. You can expect: salad blend, spinach, kale, radishes, turnips, bok choy, garlic, onions, preserves, and more…
(We will also be carrying local ((*by local we mean lincoln*)) products from):

black.shed

Our good friends and special guests will be setting up for the day with mushrooms and pastured eggs.

The intent of our open house is to bring community together through agriculture, conversation and art. Our gardens will be free to roam all day and we will be running guided tours at 11:30 and 2.

We will be setting up a flower seeding and transplant station for the kidos (actually for all the loving moms out there, happy Mother’s Day!) and Finn’s lemonade stand will be there for refreshments.

Of course I won’t let a post be that simple, so here is a wordy sentence from our resident A.I. (Arlo intelligence):

Food and art are a crucially fundamental part of a local community, an adhesive that creates culture and binds us together no matter how diverse the populations.

Yeah, I said it…

Come join us for a day full of education, food, art, and community

Have you ever wondered who, what, where, when, how and why, your organic produce is cared for by a small family farm with big heart?

If you haven’t, you should…

Having a direct relationship with your food, Knowing where it comes from, the folks who have produced it, and the intentions of the farms are so important because:
-A localized food system is good for the local environment, community and economy
-Connecting families with local agriculture directly impacts their health in a positive manor
-Educating the youth about where their food comes from and how it was produced helps them make informed decisions about their ecosystem and their diet which sets them up for a healthy future
-Supporting local farms props up our local economy because money stays in the community
-Knowing the farmer and their practices encourages a healthy local population and environment
-When supporting local responsible farms you are not unknowingly supporting forced labour, destruction of the environment or the poisoning of waterways as is the case with cheap imports and much of the food found in big grocery stores
-Because it tastes better…
-I could go on and on, but I think you get the point…

Supporting small, responsible, local farms and businesses has never been more important. By making a conscious choice to support these local businesses, you are fostering dietary and environmental sovereignty within your very own community. We have all seen how fragile our internationalized food and amenity systems truly are in this wild time we call the present. We need to make communal changes and show our leaders that a localized system is where we are voting with our dollars.

Join us for our open house on May 9th to walk the gardens, see what’s growing, see how we grow, purchase FRESH, produce and have insightful conversations about community, environment and food.

This will be a day full of….

Warning:
This post is brought to you by A.I. (Arlo Intelligence)

Spring is here and we are working diligently to bring our community fresh, organic, nutrient dense, vegetables. We are only a few weeks away from a soft opening at our farm store and we can’t wait to see you there!

With unstable global energy, fertilizer, and chemical markets running rampant, in the wild times we call the present, food inflation is at an all time high. Because of our human scale, organic practices and the fact that we try to use as little inputs from outside our farm as possible, global markets do not have as large of an impact on our farm as they do conventional (chemical) farms. This means that we do not inflate at the rate of our chemical counterparts.

Never has it been more important to support small, local, responsible farms. We need major changes in our food system and agricultural practices if we desire a healthy environment that fosters a healthy community. It’s up to us to support small local businesses so we can keep our neighbourhoods and environment healthy all while cultivating a strong local economy-together as a community.

When choosing to support small local businesses, you are choosing to nurture…

2025, what can we say…
More importantly what did we learn???
As featured in this post, we learned that a farm is not just a place that produces food.
It is a place that centres itself right at the intersection of community, cuisine, art, environment, friendship and family.
Through the love of this land and the appreciation our local community has for it, we have formed a new family. Not a family born of blood, but a family born from art, music, agriculture, food, respect, appreciation and most of all LOVE! Without this overwhelming LOVE, from our local community, this protected piece of land would not be able to foster a safe place to practice community, whatever you perceive community to be.
Thank you
From our hearts to yours
This year has unlimited potential to continue to build out this community
We have NO reason to live in fear
Be part of the change
We are here now
In this moment
Together
