Fresh from the farm to the McNally House kitchen! 🧺🍅🧄

A big thank you to Substrata Farm for providing these beautiful, fresh ingredients. Steph, our Kitchen Coordinator, roasted up a delicious mix of tomatoes, garlic, and onions to prep a cozy batch of soup for this weekend’s community soup pot!

This post is a reminder that our Farm Store is open Thursday-Saturday, 10:00-5:00.

Our fridges and shelves are fully stocked with organic, nutrient dense, grown onsite, (with love and care for the environment and the community), vegetables and preserves.

The time to support small local farms and businesses is now! It has never been more difficult for small businesses to operate and we risk losing locality to monopolies if we don’t show our leaders that a localized system is where we are voting with our dollars.

As a small farm it is difficult to compete with cheap foreign imports where food is grown with reckless disregard for the environment and produced by folks with marginal living conditions and poverty level wages. Spending a couple extra dollars at a local farm can directly benefit you and your family in many ways. Don’t believe me, let’s name a few:
-Buying local is better for the environment because nothing is being shipped and also because we have environmental regulation surrounding our agriculture unlike many cheap foreign imports. A healthier environment for future generations sounds like an important thing that we can achieve through our shopping habits.
-Buying local can lead to a healthier life because you can meet the person who grows your food and can observe their practices to determine if how they farm fits into your health agenda. Often at big chain grocery stores the farms that produce the food remain faceless and nameless. When you buy cheap calories you will pay for it with your health in the future!
-Supporting small local business creates a stronger local economy because the money we spend stays in our community and circulates within our local economy. When we spend at the big grocers we are ejecting money out of our economy to monopolized, nameless, faceless corporations.
Enough of that game…
I suggest next time you need produce, or protein, go check out the local artisanal shops and farm stands that lie in our beautiful community. You might be surprised on what you find and the people you might form connections with along the way..
