I have always taken pride in teaching my kids about agriculture, work ethic and what it takes to make the food we eat. Part of it is economics and so each kid got their own heifer as a calf to raise to start their “herd”. Each year their cow calves and they have a choice whether to keep their “heifer” or “steer” or sell it and the money then goes into their savings account. If they choose to keep their “heifer” calf then the build their herd and have more calves in the future. The money in savings is set aside to help them out with vehicle, education or housing in the future.
I think this is an awesome way to not only teach them responsibility and work for they have to help out with chores, I think it’s a good way to make them feel involved in it as well for they now have a “piece of the pie”. The kids have really taken to it and spring calving is one of their favorite times of year for they love seeing all the calves being born and getting to cuddle with the ones that have to come in to warm up.
