Spring in the garden is a season of rapid transformation and intense activity, marking the transition from winter dormancy to active growth. As temperatures rise, soil thaws, and days lengthen, the garden awakens with new life...

The garlic is growing beautifully, the asparagus is struggling a little as the nights are still cold, the Daffodils will soon come to an end, the bees are beesing, the goats are goating 🤣

Can you believe we reached 20C today? What a blessing! Wednesday and Thursday night may deep down to 1C again... yet life goes on 😍

Location: Belleville Farmer's Market
Time: 8:30am-1:00pm

Lewa's Farm main theme will be "Daffodils, Raw Honey & Asparagus".

What a perfect spring transition!
It's always a bit bittersweet to see the Daffodils fade, but the arrival of local Asparagus is a pretty fantastic consolation prize.

Here is what to expect for the next two months:
🍜 The Asparagus "Sprint"
We are looking at about an 8-week window (typically through the end of June), weather permitting. On very warm days, asparagus can grow up to 25 cm in 24 hours. Farmers often have to harvest the same field twice a day during a heatwave to keep the spears from getting "woody." Harvest usually stops in late June not because the plant stops growing, but to let the spears turn into tall, feathery ferns. This allows the plant to store energy in its roots for next year’s crop.

🥬 What’s next on the menu on the farm?
If you're following the local harvest cycle, here is what usually joins the asparagus in the basket over the next few weeks:
🔜Early May: Rhubarb (the ultimate partner for spring desserts).
🔜Mid to late May: Radishes and spring greens and herbs (spinach, lettuce, arugula, cilantro, dill, parsley...).
🔜Mid-June: The grand finale of spring—Strawberries.

(A quick side note: Mother Spring is a little undecided and so she's throwing a tantrum tomorrow night once again. Make sure to bring your seedlings/plants indoors while it drops sub-zero).

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
We're looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Happy Friday!

There are 15 days left until spring. In the meantime we'll be playing "What's it gonna be tomorrow? Mud, ice or snow?" 😅

Well, we've seen and conquered the worst. From here on it's just a blink of an eye before greenery will take over. Lash, verdant vegetation will once again take over, with pollinators going back to work 🐝

Tomorrow, March 7th will be the first day with a double digit temp. We're looking forward to seeing you at the farmer's market 9am to noon. Bring an umbrella, you might need it, but don't let the rain keep you indoors!

The pictures are from April 2025, sadly the ground is still covered with snow here on the farm, so no spring flowers yet.

Daylight saving time start this Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m. local time and also on Sunday is International Women's Day and calls for celebration!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Throwback May 2021 😍
Sending warm vibes...

Did you know Chive flowers/blossoms are fully edible, offering a delicate, garlicky-onion flavor and vibrant purple color to dishes? Infusing white vinegar for pink salad dressings, blending into butter or cream cheese, scattering in fresh salads, topping grilled foods, or using in savory baked goods like biscuits are just some ideas.

Please note - we will NOT be attending farmer's market this Saturday, January 31st. We'll try again the following weekend. The weather is just not cooperating here, but please don't get me wrong... I'm not complaining 😃

Please check with Haanover View Farms and Mayall's Apothecary for their operating hours.

While some may criticize the amount of snow we have received so far this winter, I would like to reassure you that all this snow is wonderful for the fields. Snow is the 'poor man's fertilizer' because of its insulating properties, moisture provision, and nutrient-carrying capabilities. A consistent snow cover protects dormant crops from extreme temperatures, reduces erosion, and prepares the soil for spring planting. For once, our garlic and wheat are nicely tucked in, safe/protected from these bitterly winds.

A snowy weather can also help maintain a 'natural reset' for pest populations, while insulating soil keeps beneficial microbes alive. Yes, all this snow might not be ideal for the farmers with livestock, as deep snow makes it quite difficult to move around the farm, feed and water the animals.

In any case, please be safe on the roads and please note that we will NOT be attending the market this Saturday Jan 24th.

Have a safe weekend!
Hugs ❤️

Fresh baby dill available. Great for pickling, with delicate flavor and tender texture. They had a longer germination period due to drought conditions but they're finally ready.

Many of you asked why the lack of red bell peppers and Shepherd peppers... Well the extreme temperature conditions is causing the delay to ripen. In very hot weather, pepper plants get stressed and their metabolic processes slow down. The plants will then use their resources to survive rather than to ripen their fruits. Also the blossoms drop. With the cooler temperatures in the forecast, they should now start to get some color. Will they make new blossoms? There's still time, however daylight hours are now decreasing as we're approaching fall season.

Have a great week!
