Mount Wolfe Farm

Mount Wolfe Farm Mount Wolfe Farm is a year-round Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm that aims to service our We look forward to meeting you!

Starting in 1967, the first generation of Crandalls planted 100000+ trees on this special piece of land, transforming it from a conventional farm into the restored ecological success story it is today. Now members of the second and third generation are launching a new project to extend the gifts of the land to 100 local families through our Community Supported Agriculture program. Vegetables, frui

t, eggs, bread, meat, preserves, and many more products like honey and maple syrup will be provided to our member families year-round from our farm and a network of carefully selected local producers who share our ecological values. Participants in the program are welcome to volunteer on the land and share in the beautiful surroundings, while having a hand in growing the freshest, tastiest produce around! Come share in a community of people who are passionate about empowering the local economy and strengthening access to healthful, ecological food. Please visit our website http://mountwolfefarm.ca/ to explore the 3 membership options: Full Share, Workshare, and Chicken Share.

Soundscape of scything aka what the rye cover crop hears before it’s purpose is fulfilled ahead of our tomato plot prep.

Enjoy the textured sounds of this meditative (and fun!) ancestral skill that we practise at the farm*

In the meantime, please re-send and/or exclusively reach out via [email protected]

All this in the thick of CSA-sign up season, yikes. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

A special "Toronto Life" highlight of our MWF friend, Sara Baron Goodman!

"For Baron Goodman, q***r food goes beyond aesthetics. It’s about the entire system—from the sustainable sourcing of ingredients to the ethical treatment of workers. “Food is so deeply personal and political,” she says. “You can learn a lot about someone by what they eat.”

Baron Goodman often sources ingredients from local producers like Mount Wolfe Farm in Caledon, a women-run operation focused on sustainable agriculture.

Lambing Day 3 - Downpour

Pictured here is a baby that got too cold (📷 2022) and needed intervention and the warming box.

The sky has opened up.

A farmer stands by the mudroom window, watching the grey sheets of rain soak the landscape.

Checking the flock doesn't wait for the sun - but it still requires self-discipline to go out to the fields.

Topsy Farms runs on a rotational grazing system.

It’s good for the plants and the soil, like a natural lawnmowing service that leaves nitrogen behind.

We follow the old wisdom: "Never hear the church bell twice in the same field."

Though actually, just a couple of days per paddock is ideal.

It keeps the parasites at bay, as they use the dew like a tiny teleporter to infect the host.

The rain brings a familiar shadow: hypothermia.

We provide free-choice shelter, but sometimes a ewe chooses the open pasture for her delivery.

If a lamb is quick to its feet and gets that first drink of colostrum, it survives the chill.

Others aren't so lucky.

A newborn’s temperature can drop into the danger zone faster than a human can reach them (39° C is normal).

When the shivering becomes life-threatening, we bring the survivor back to the house to warm up.

Many will return to their mothers, but some become fosters - lambs that, for many reasons, cannot stay with the ewe.

Whether it’s the damp cold of early May causing distress or the mournful cry of a lost (or abandoned) lamb, a shepherd’s job is to identify the vulnerable.

This month is physically and emotionally taxing.

We are so grateful for our volunteers and hardworking staff.

We are so grateful for our virtual adopters; that milk replacer is a heavy expense.

A farmer pulls on the rain slicker and fisherman's hat - this expedition can only be put off for so long.

There are little survivors out there waiting for a hand.

Thank you for being part of this adventure.

Thank you for helping us to keep the farmland as a farm.

This Mother's day, we celebrate with deep gratitude our Mother, the Earth. Our only home, brimming with abundance, and generous beyond measure. We love you, Mother Earth, thank you for this good life!

When the people call the Earth “Mother,”
They take with love
And with love give back
So that all may live.
When the people call Earth “it,”
They use her
Consume her strength. Then the people die.
Already the sun is hot
Out of season.
Our Mother’s breast
Is going dry.
She is taking all green
Into her heart
And will not turn back
Until we call her
By her name.

Elena’s Birthday is today! Wishing her a wonderful trip around the sun
💫 🌞
Thank you for bringing your passion and commitment to the earth and her beings into how you show up daily as a part of our small but mighty farm team
🌱 🙏
We’re taking the opportunity to introduce our followers to the wonderful folks in Farm-orbit on the occasions of their birthdays. Elena is a dynamo of a person demonstrated by how she wears multiple hats on the farm, .wolfe.branches Branch Manager hat and Field Hand hat in veggie-land! Plus a third new not-so-secret-anymore hat as .hour.flowers which we are excited to share how this independent project of hers will be woven into Farmstore & CSA pickup offerings throughout the season (stay tuned!) in addition to growing blooms on a patch of garden near the farmstore.
🌼 💖
Looking forward to celebrating you tomorrow on your first day back for the season! Happy Birthday!!
