Nucs, nucs and more nucs. No, not Nukes WMD . Nucleus colonies for next seasons expansion. The pro nuc boxes are used for queen mating nucs and the wooden ones are established with mated queens. Almost all are being fed, some of the overwintered nucs that were robbed of resources multiple times to make more nucs have made some honey 🍯. All are being monitored for health and resources. The new Saskatraz queens are doing well and moving up into their second boxes. The mating nucs should be ready to check for queen success in a couple of weeks. They will be used for requeening or boosted from the other overwintered nucs and put in the 6 frame nuc boxes. Fingers crossed 🤞

Grafted on the back of my truck a little while ago and we made up nucs for the cells today. I wasn't expecting 28 out of 30, but I'll take it. "Proof is in the pudding" they say, so we'll check back later when they are mated. Yes, I used a 6 frame nuc box to build cells, I shook a lot of bees in this and they had 2 big pollen frames mixed with open nectar, plus I added 2 solid frames of hatching brood for the 2 outside frames , they had no eggs or larvae to feed other than the grafts I gave them. Worked just fine. 🐝
More grafts will be put in the nuc tomorrow.

Adding more honey supers today, these hives actually made some honey in their deep we gave them whilst in a holding yard after blueberry pollination, even after we pulled brood out of them and gave them empty comb to prevent swarming, now they are busy enjoying their summer location 🐝.

This mead wouldn't be what it is without the incredible honey from The Little Bee Farm. Their commitment to producing high-quality local honey gives us the perfect foundation to create something we're truly proud of. A huge thank you to their team for helping make this award possible.

The funny thing is, many of you already knew how good it was. Our current batch is nearly sold out! 🍯🍾

The good news? More is already fermenting, and we'll have another batch ready before long.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our mead program, picked up a can, shared it with friends, or encouraged us to keep making it. It's always rewarding to see a product made with local ingredients earn recognition on a national stage.

Unfortunately we suffered heavy losses this year and won't be able to place hives in all of our summer yards. This means less 2026 honey 🍯 as well.
The drought last summer took its toll on the bees and it seems that we will have to adapt to our changing weather to prevent it from happening again.
I will be in touch with our summer yard land owners that we can place hives. There will be some that will be used to grow more hives for next season.

We will rebuild.
Fingers crossed 🤞 for a good 2026 season to all farmers.
