Erin Brockovich says the public anger at massive AI data centers is really anger at being kept in the dark. Billion-dollar facilities are approved before most residents even know they're coming. And the concerns people have are very reasonable. Water drawn during droughts, strained power grids, diesel generators polluting, rising utility bills, unwanted sound.

Deep down though, there is no consent being asked for. Imagine using your mind and body to build wealth and eventually a home, only to have corporations sneakily purchase land around it and then build something that is going to harm your ability to live well. Of course people should be upset.

This is the same dynamic that shows up everywhere right now. We're told the expansion is inevitable - necessary for progress, competitiveness, innovation - and that framing is exactly how participation gets quietly removed from the equation. "Shoved down people's throats," as Brockovich puts it.

I'm not anti-technology and I don't think we need to be. We can advance forward, but doing so with wisdom is key. For me, people becoming upset with so many of the things society is doing right now is a sign people are waking up to the insane effects of our current state of societal design and will begin demanding something different. Something more human centric and where corporations can't simply do whatever they want to keep becoming wealthy while the masses suffer.

A new report from the United Nations University warns that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence could place significant pressure on global water resources.

Researchers estimate that by 2030, AI-related infrastructure may consume water equivalent to the annual basic domestic needs of up to 1.3 billion people and potentially exceed the world's annual drinking water requirements.

The report highlights the growing environmental footprint of data centers, which require large amounts of water for cooling and electricity generation as AI adoption accelerates worldwide.

The AI boom has a problem that no algorithm can solve.

It needs electricity. Enormous amounts of it. And the infrastructure required to deliver that electricity at the scale modern AI demands is hitting walls that have nothing to do with software or investment or ambition.

Reports suggest that nearly half of the data centers planned for 2026 could face delays or outright cancellation. Not because the demand isn't there — it absolutely is — but because the physical world isn't keeping pace with the digital one.

The list of obstacles reads like a perfect storm of infrastructure failure. Power grids in many regions are already operating near capacity, with little room to absorb the sudden massive demand that a large data center represents. Transformers — the critical equipment that steps electricity down to usable levels — face supply backlogs stretching years, not months. Permitting processes move at the speed of government while investment moves at the speed of venture capital. Local communities are pushing back against facilities that consume enormous power, generate noise, strain water supplies, and often create far fewer jobs than the land they occupy might otherwise support.

And underneath all of it sits a more fundamental constraint — the electrical grid in many parts of the world was not designed for this moment. It was built for a different era of energy consumption, and upgrading it requires time, investment, and coordination that can't be rushed.

Tech companies have spent years promising that AI infrastructure was being built at speed. What's becoming clear is that the physical foundations that infrastructure depends on have limits that money alone can't overcome.

The AI race is moving fast.
