If you know your British pottery, you know the name. Price & Kensington have been making proper teaware in Stoke-on-Trent since 1896, the same heritage behind the iconic Brown Betty. Fun fact: the iconic red phone box was almost silver.

Back in 1924 the Post Office ran a competition to design it. Giles Gilbert Scott won, and he wanted silver with a blue-green interior. The Post Office said "nah" and went red instead. Proper decision, if you ask us.

It went cast iron, got a redesign in 1935 for the King's Silver Jubilee (smaller, cheaper, still gorgeous), and boxes like it went up across the country. Ours spent decades doing its duty on some British street before making the trip to Burlington, where it's called our window home for over 15 years now.

It's housed our fridge. It's housed our Christmas tree. Honestly, at this point it's family.

Wandering to Marymass πŸ«…

This August, Caroline travelled back to her hometown of Irvine when the whole town came alive for one of Ayrshire's oldest traditions.

Marymass goes back centuries, long before the Queen and horse parade people know it for today. It started as a medieval religious fair tied to the Feast of the Assumption, with records linking the celebration back to 1386.

The Irvine Carters' Society (working horsemen who transported goods across Ayrshire) became central to it, which is why horses and the mounted procession are still at the heart of Marymass today. To this day, motorised vehicles aren't allowed in the Carters' procession.

The festival wasn't always continuous either. It was cancelled during both World Wars, and by the early 1900s it was fading in popularity, until 1928, when a crowned Queen and her Four Marys were introduced to bring it back to life. That tradition is still less than 100 years old, compared to the festival itself.

Twelve days of parades, competitions, horse racing, the legendary bed race, shows, and fireworks, all built on hundreds of years of history.

Caroline got to see it all this time round: the bands, the horses moving through town, the crowds lining the streets. History, still alive and well in Irvine.

Today is World Entrepreneur Day, and we think our story is worth sharing. 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Back in 2007, our founder Caroline Kohler was living in Burlington and missing home. Not just in a vague, wistful way - she genuinely couldn't find the foods she grew up with. The biscuits, the teas, the comfort of a proper meat pie. Things that felt ordinary back in Scotland felt completely out of reach here in Ontario.

So she did something about it.

Caroline opened The Wandering Scott with a simple but powerful idea: if she was feeling this gap, so were hundreds of other British and Irish expats across the Halton Region. She sourced the real thing - Walker's Shortbread, Fry's, proper traditional teas - and partnered with local bakers to bring fresh British meat pies and baked goods to shelves too.

The name says it all. "The Wandering Scott" is a nod to the Scottish diaspora - those of us who've wandered far from home but never really left it behind.

Nearly 20 years later, what started as a small local shop now ships authentic British goods across Canada.

That's what entrepreneurship looks like when it comes from the heart.
