When you get asked while leaving your day job “any plans this weekend ?” I laugh and say “oh no not really ,gotta stick close to the farm still calving “, Malcolm says when I do get home , “let’s go feed and put fresh bedding down” , “sure” I say, myself who has better hearing than Malcolm hears calf crying … as you might notice after trying to milk this old gal for 15 min I got a bit sweaty and my barn jacket came off for the last video to just barn sweater 😂 I will raise him up old girl , you did a great job over the last 14 years but this was just the year you couldn’t make any more milk , thank you for all the calves over the years , thank you for always warning me to back off but never hurting me ,as I respected you and you I , thank for being great for Malcolm as well over the few years I haven’t been around to watch you calf, I did warn him about you 😉 Your calf will be spoiled I promise ! And now you all know why I might always giggle when people ask what my plans are because life on the farm I never truly know but wouldn’t change it for the world!

I won’t say much more on this here but I wanted to share today what happened and why we need the Provincial Vets. Which to stop the rumour we will be billed for this service is not free. I have hundreds of stories over the years but…the below images are stills from today from our camera in the barn. I must warn the faint of heart that they involve a C Section , however, this cow who we love dearly ,her name is Mae, and have raised since being born here went into labour , with the calf not in the right position Malcolm called the Vet , the calf was being stubborn , a C Section was preformed , something us farmers just aren’t capable of, but trained professionals are. The care and attention, precision is remarkable, no pain no fuss no muss! The horrible outcome for Mae once the Veterinary Services are gone is well… you know… we would have no other choice, the pain , as well as mental impact on us the farmers to make that trigger would not be easy, but in a circumstance like today in the future we will have no other choice , or do we give up farming all together? The last image is tonight after all is well we needed to help the lovely new baby girl get her milk, you can see Malcolm helping hold the calf and me giving her a bottle of colostrum (first milk) a powder we mixed up to help not just her but many calves over the years get a good start, where do we buy this colostrum you ask? The Vet Clinic, the provincial Vet clinic , the same place we rely on for our naval dip , vaccines, and everything in between. In closing before I make this the last post on this subject there is a petition to fight this , please take the few minutes to do so that we and all other dairy, beef , sheep, goat, pig and everything in between can continue to have the services they need. Thank you

I borrowed this from a fellow farmer and tweaked because it is to us perfectly written (I did ask first ;) ) I will also share on here the original post, please share both, this is an important matter that needs to be addressed.

🚨 **This Should Concern Every Person in Our Province** 🚨
PLEASE SHARE!
As a beef farmer, I don’t usually speak up about politics — but this decision affects all of us.
Our provincial government has decided to eliminate our **large animal veterinary services and their lab**.
Let that sink in for a moment.
These vets are not just “farm vets.” They are the frontline protection for:
🐄 The health and welfare of our livestock
🥛 The safety of our beef and food supply
🦠 Disease prevention and outbreak control
🌾 The stability of local agriculture and food production
Without them, farmers like us are left with fewer resources, longer response times in emergencies, and less support to keep animals healthy.
Who is there for calving problems at 3 am?….the Provincial Vets
Who is there for us to ensure our young calves are meeting all the necessary requirements before leaving our farm? the Provincial Vets…the list could go on and on….

This isn’t just a farming issue.
This impacts **every family who eats food produced in our province**.
If something goes wrong — disease, contamination, or animal health issues — these are the people and labs that catch it early and keep it from becoming a much bigger problem.
Removing them puts our farms, our food system, and our rural communities at risk.

Well that’s a wrap on Apple season 2025 , thank you to everyone who came and bought pre picked , U Picked , bought my pickles , jellies and apple butter , tomatoes, squash or picked up a pumpkin! I always say if it wasn’t for you all Malcolm and I would be just people who grew fruit and veggies , and with years like this summer not for the fun of it, being so dry! Hope you all have a fantastic rest of the fall and safe winter! I’m sure I will pepper in some new born calf photos in the coming winter months, but again thank you all for your support in 2025 and see you all in the summer of 2026 for Malcolm 35th strawberry season! Melisa and Malcolm Gilbert ❤️
