If my husband was a talker, this is what he would say about showing sheep and cattle with his little girl. Yes, the banners are always the goal, but the life ❤️ lessons learned along the way are the why…

One of my friends asked, "Why do you pay so much money for your daughter to showstock?" Well I have a confession to make, I don't pay for my daughter to showstock.

So, if I am not paying for them to show, what am I paying for?

- I pay for those moments when my daughter become so tired she wants to quit but don't.

- I pay for those days when my daughter comes home from school and is "too tired" to go the barn but goes anyway.

- I pay for my daughter to learn to be disciplined.

- I pay for my daughter to learn to take care of her body.

- I pay for my daughter to learn to work with others and to be good team mate.

- I pay for my daughter to learn to deal with disappointment, when she don't win what she hoped for, but still have to work hard in the grading.

- I pay for my daughter to learn to make and accomplish goals.

- I pay for my daughter to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.

- I pay for the opportunity my daughter has and will have to make life-long friendships.

- I pay so that my daughter can be in the ring instead of in front of a screen...
..I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for show lambs or show cattle. I pay for the opportunities that showing livestock provides my daughter with to develop attributes that will serve her well throughout her life and give her the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far, there is no greater investment out there.

We get asked a few times every year why we dont breed our ewe lambs

We personally don’t breed our ewe lambs because we like to see them have their lamb and yearling year to really grow, mature and prove themselves. We show our sheep, so we also like giving them the opportunity to develop and compete without the added demand of raising a lamb. It lets us evaluate their structure, growth, maturity and overall quality before breeding them.

That said, what works for us doesn’t necessarily work for everyone! There are lots of successful programs that breed ewe lambs, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We just prefer to give ours the extra time to grow and mature before putting them into production.

That’s what’s so great about the livestock world everyone has different goals, management styles and things that work best for their program! There’s no one-size-fits-all way to do it.
