INSIDE THE GLASS, Featuring Tokyo Drift IPA

Each week we’ll be featuring one of our many beers we have on tap in both Argyle and McCullough’s to provide our members with some backstory into their favourite beers. This week, take a look inside the glass of the Tokyo Drift IPA from

The story of Last Best’s Tokyo Drift takes us all the way back to 2015 when the head brewer at the time issued a challenge to his brew team. Create a new IPA to rival their first offering, which became known as IPA #2. Although IPA #2 was delicious, the brew team countered the challenge back to the head brewer who created IPA #3, what is now known as Tokyo Drift. Now a core beer at Last Best Brewing.

At the time Tokyo Drift was created, it went against the traditional norms of what an IPA was, focusing less on the clear caramel colours and bitterness from the hops. This was a beer that was hazy, getting its pronounced colours from yeast, with lower bitterness and sweeter undertones. The beer incorporates hops not traditionally used in North American IPA’s, and used hop varieties like Australian, New Zealand, and Citra. The beer also used oats in the grain bill, which is not traditional for this style of beer.

The infamous name for the beer, Tokyo Drift, came from it being the 3rd installment to Last Bests’ franchise, like Tokyo Drift was to the Fast and Furious franchise. Just like the movie, it came with a cast of new characters, marking the dawn of a new era for the company.
