Two local businesses.
Two 10-year milestones. 💚✨

This year marks 10 years for both SpiraVeg and Little Modern Market.

We’ll be joining over 110 amazing local and small businesses 10-year celebration at the Red & White Club.

For the past decade, Little Modern Market has built a beautiful community that supports local makers, small businesses, and meaningful connections — and we’re grateful to be part of this special event.

At SpiraVeg, this year is also deeply meaningful for us.

As part of our “SpiraVeg For Kids” initiative, our small team of moms and pre-teens recently completed their first half marathon and 10K races while fundraising for Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. 🏃‍♀️💚

Because for us, wellness is about more than food alone.

It’s about:
✨ community
✨ healthy families
✨ movement
✨ resilience
✨ and supporting the next generation

If you’re attending the market, come say hi, learn more about Canadian-grown spirulina, and support local businesses building something meaningful in our community. 🌱

📅 May 30

📍 Red & White Club, Calgary

We can’t wait to see you there! 💚

We’re back today 💚

Come learn more about Canadian-grown spirulina and experience the different forms of spirulina we offer — including fresh raw spirulina harvested yesterday and our freeze-dried spirulina powder. 🌱

Curious what real spirulina tastes like?
You’ll even be able to try it straight from the spoon. ✨

We always love connecting with the community in person, sharing our story, and having conversations around wellness, nutrition, and quality food.

If you’re in the area, come say hi!

Field Notes #08 — Why Spirulina Thrives in Alkaline Lakes 🔬

Most life struggles in highly alkaline environments.

Spirulina does the opposite.

In nature, spirulina evolved in warm, mineral-rich alkaline lakes with a very high pH — conditions too extreme for many competing microorganisms to survive.

That harsh environment became part of its evolutionary advantage.

Over time, spirulina adapted to intense sunlight, fluctuating temperatures, and chemically challenging water conditions. Its pigments, cellular structure, and rapid photosynthetic activity all helped it survive where other organisms could not.

This is also one reason spirulina can be cultivated in relatively controlled systems with lower microbial competition compared to many other crops.

The environment shaped the organism.

And the organism adapted with remarkable efficiency.

Observation: Harsh environments select for resilient biology.

🌍 Last Earth Day, nature helped us spell our name from space.
This year, we’re thinking about something simpler — the choices we make every day.

Every meal is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.

Spirulina has been part of Earth’s system for billions of years —
growing efficiently, requiring minimal land and water, and working in balance with its environment. 🌿

We simply grow it with care.

Because what we choose to eat shapes more than just our health. 💚

Carefully grown. Thoughtfully crafted.

Field Notes #07 — How Spirulina Protects Itself 🔬

Spirulina doesn’t grow in gentle environments.

It lives under intense sunlight, in highly alkaline water —
conditions that constantly challenge the cell.

To survive, it produces protective compounds.

One of them is phycocyanin —
a pigment that captures light for photosynthesis,
while also helping manage oxidative stress.

These compounds aren’t created for us.
They’re created for survival.

But when we consume spirulina,
that chemistry comes with it.

Sometimes what helps an organism endure
becomes what helps support the body.

Observation: What protects it can support us.

Spring often gets labeled as “detox season.”

But your body already has built-in detox systems —
the liver, kidneys, gut, and skin — working every day.

The question isn’t how to detox,
but how to support these systems better.

🌿 Hydration supports kidney filtration
🌿 Fiber supports gut elimination
🌿 Protein supports liver enzyme pathways
🌿 Micronutrients support cellular defense

This is where nutrient density matters.

Spirulina has been studied for its ability to bind certain heavy metals in experimental settings —
but more importantly, it provides a range of nutrients that support multiple systems at once:

• Liver — rich in amino acids + antioxidants (like phycocyanin) that support enzyme activity
• Kidneys — minerals + hydration-supportive nutrients involved in fluid balance
• Gut — easily digestible proteins and compounds that may support microbial balance
• Skin — antioxidants that help protect against oxidative stress

One whole food.
Multiple systems supported.

Not because it “detoxes” —
but because it nourishes what your body already uses to do the work.

That’s what nutrient-dense food looks like.

Do you know another whole food
that supports the body in so many ways? 👀

Carefully grown. Thoughtfully crafted.

Field Notes #06 — Why Spirulina Is Easy to Digest 🔬

Spirulina isn’t just nutrient-dense — it’s built differently.

Unlike most plant foods, it doesn’t have tough cellulose cell walls.
That means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to access what’s inside.

Its proteins, amino acids, and pigments are more readily available —
so nutrients can be absorbed faster, not locked behind structure.

Most greens lose something at this step.
Spirulina doesn’t.

Sometimes it’s not just what you eat —
it’s what your body can actually use.

Observation: No cell wall = faster nutrient release.
