Street Hawker (2 locations - Cambie Village and Mount Pleasant)

This burger joint is super trendy (and fantastic!) serving up Asian-inspired smash burgers, fried chicken, "Hawker" wings, shakes and more. They put their own unique spin on on these greasy classics and make them even more flavourful and filling, such as the Flamin' Fireball Fries (with cheddar cheese sauce, chilli crisp, hellfire buffalo sauce, and crushed blue heat Takis) and the Turbo Smash Burger (with cheddar cheese, yakisoba, and okomiyaki toppings). And unique wing flavours like the Fish Sauce Caramel, Taiwan Pepper-Salt, Salted Egg Yolk, and Mango Mustard. Hand-Spun shake flavours such as Ube, Panda, and the Milo Dinosaur (with Singaporean malted chocolate powder, chocolate wafers and whipped cream). Street Hawker definitely has an edge over their competition.

And the taste? Amazing! However, I was slightly boring with my choices for my first time and I wanted to try their classic Street Hawker burger and the Hyper Fries (with cheesy Hawker sauce and grilled onions - I LOVE grilled onions). Next time I promise I will be more adventurous.

If you go before Halloween, you can try their seasonal dark and spooky specials - the Monster Smash (with beef AND spicy fried chicken, bacon, cheese, hawker sauce, pickles and lettuce on a charcoal (black and spooky) bun), the Dark Matter Poutine (made with sweet potato fries, cheese curds, Jajang black bean gravy (to make it black and spooky), bacon and grilled onions), and the Dark Matter Shake (made with pumpkin, black sesame, and vanilla ice cream).

Do you dare?

House of Dosas (3 locations - Kingsway, White Rock, and Davie Street)

What IS a dosa? To be honest, I had not heard of a dosa before, and I had no inkling about the delicious surprise that I was in for. A dosa is a crepe, derived from South India, made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils. And, believe it or not, this fermented concoction actually aids in digestion and contains Vitamin B and probiotics (due to the fermentation). So, a crepe that's healthy for you? I'm going to say it is - however; the kicker? What you put inside....and these delicious Indian crepes can be filled with anything; mashed potatoes, cauliflower, eggplant, mushroom, chicken, beef, lamb; you name it. Or you can choose to have them on their own, and just dip them in the accompanying coconut chutney, tomato chutney and sambar.

I had the Masala Dosa (filled with spicy mashed potatoes), and it was so savoury and delicious, I could have eaten a few of them. We also tried their fish pakora (which was excellent - filled with beautifully flaky fish and not overly fried at all), butter chicken and biryani. But I'm dreaming of that dosa, and I need to go back again soon. The good thing (or potentially dangerous thing) is that the Kingsway and Davie Street locations are open 24 hours! I can only imagine how many people crave one of these dosas when the bars close lol...

BAGHEERA - 518 Main Street

I BET you don't know about this hidden gem? This Jungle Book inspired speak easy is beautifully inspired by Victorian India. The walls and ceiling are covered with gorgeous Indian jewellery pieces, and you would never guess that this private little speakeasy sits behind the walls of what appears to be a race-horsing betting wicket in a little bit of a sketchy part of downtown Vancouver lol. But: hint, hint: if you bet on King Louie, you are sure to be a winner, and be able to step inside the magical world of the Jungle Book where you can enjoy cocktails inspired by the story paired with Indian pakoras and curries. Come dressed for the races (as there is dress code in effect) and feel like a winner at Bagheera!

ROAD TRIP TIME!

City: Abbotsford

Destination: Sushi 9

A trip to Abbotsford was a beautiful drive for a break out of my cement juggle. And the sushi that we had at Sushi 9 was well worth the kilometres! Not only was it fresh and delicious, the price was right too! For dinner, you can get their Sashimi & Sushi Dinner Box for $30.50, which includes 7 pieces of assorted sashimi, 5 pieces of nigiri, salad, ebi sunomono, 4 pieces of ebi mayonnaise, 4 fantastic rolls (prawn tempura, crab & cucumber), 3 cast rolls (a deep fried roll with cream cheese, avocado, salmon and crab), and miso soup. This is definitely enough for 2! Not only was every bite delicious, the presentation was beautiful as well.

Loved this road trip - can’t wait for the next one!

Cardero’s - 1583 Coal Harbour Quay

Love, love, LOVE Cardero’s! The food is amazing, the view is fantastic, and the service is good. Yes, I said good; although the servers are very friendly, I have found the service to be slow (when not busy). The must try? Their Roasted Sablefish with miso-sake marinade, wok fried rice and veggies. That sablefish will melt in your mouth, and honestly, I could have eaten two helpings. Check it out below! And I found the absolute perfect w**e pairing for this sablefish.... the CedarCreek Riesling. Local sablefish, local w**e...this combination is a win-win!

Michele Chiarlo Winemaker Dinner at Bungalow Club

The Bungalow Club just opened on 17th Ave. in February in the former space of La Chaumiere. The cuisine and the decor are very modern European fusion, and the ambience is simply stunning. This is definitely a place to come for ch*****ne and appies on the patio (hopefully to open soon) this summer to feel like European elite.

The food was fantastic, and I’m a huge fan of Michele Chiarlo w**es, so the evening was an absolute success.

Course 1: Tomato sashimi in a house made tomato spice with a glass chip in a tomato water bath. Hand-sliced speck (imported from Italy) with sweet and sour Gherkin cubes and a Dijon whip. Paired with Michele Chiarlo Le Orme Barbera d’Asti. These were beautiful amuse bouche, and who would think a simple tomato done so many ways could be such a tastebud explosion! And that the glass chip could hold so much flavor!

Course 2: Spinach pear cress salad with a medley of olives and fresh pears on a roasted pecan and goat cheese coulis topped with crispy watermelon radish, paired with Michele Chiarlo Le Marne Gavi.

Course 3: Chorizo bolognese: spiced chorizo slow roasted in a rouge w**e sauce served with tagliatelle noodles, paired with Michele Chiarlo Cipressi Nizza. Loved the lemon zest added to this dish to cut through the richness - beautiful touch!

Course 4: Crispy gnocchi discs in a four cheese beurre Blanc sauce with duck confit clusters and a sweet apple butter coulis, paired with Michele Chiarlo Palas Barolo. What made this dish stand out? The blue cheese of course!

Course 5: Pan fried chicken in a cauliflower and truffle purée topped with a light honey glaze and citrus dusting, paired with Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi.

Course 6: Deconstructed panna cotta cheesecake infused with citrus curd, with balsamic macerated strawberries and pavlova shards, paired with Michele Chiarlo Nivole Moscato d’Asti. I love, love, love this Moscato!
