Some evenings remind you why w**e is so much more than what’s in the glass. 🍷

A huge thank you to Laurent Drouhin for joining us at ZYN and sharing his perspective on Burgundy, its incredible diversity of terroir, and the philosophy behind the w**es of Maison Joseph Drouhin.

One thought that stuck with us? Clay, chalk and limestone each bring something different to a w**e. Calling it all “minerality” doesn’t tell the whole story.

And when it comes to w**emaking, the Drouhin family has never been one to chase trends. Whether the fashion was more oak or less, their focus has remained on making w**es that reflect their own philosophy and the place they come from.

That commitment to terroir is a big part of what makes Burgundy so endlessly fascinating.

What happens when you stop looking for one perfect vineyard and start looking for the places that truly stand out?

That was the idea behind Luigi Bosca’s Legacy collection.

When Alberto Arizu brought w**emaker Pablo Cúneo on in 2017, the two set out to explore some of Mendoza’s most distinctive corners, identifying small plots in Vistalba, Gualtallary and Altamira that were producing exceptional fruit.

The result is a collection made in minuscule quantities, with each w**e showing a different expression of Argentina’s mountain terroir.

Our team recently tasted Los Filos, Los Leones and Paraíso, and came away reminded just how exciting Argentina can be when you let the vineyard do the talking.

There’s a real sense of place in these w**es. You can feel the mountains.

Then there's the blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, espresso and liquorice situation happening in the glass.

Some w**e cellars are for aging w**e - but at one point, the Drouhin cellars were also an escape route from the Gestapo!

During WWII, Maurice Drouhin was involved with the French Resistance. When the Gestapo came looking for him in 1944, he escaped through the family's ancient cellars beneath Beaune and made his way to the Hospices de Beaune, where he was hidden by the sisters until the liberation of the city.

And somehow, that's only one chapter in the history of Maison Joseph Drouhin.

Four generations later, the family is still making some of Burgundy's most celebrated w**es.

Chile doesn't exactly need an introduction to Cabernet anymore.

But Don Melchor has been making the case for Chilean fine w**e for a very long time.

The story goes back to 1883, when Bordeaux varieties were first planted in the Maipo Valley by Don Melchor de Santiago Co**ha y Toro.

Fast forward to 2021 and this vintage was named W**e Spectator's #1 W**e of the Year.

We'd say the experiment worked!

The Cathiards have been the force behind Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux since 1990. In 2020, they added a historic Napa Valley estate to the family portfolio and began a new chapter with Cathiard Vineyard.
