Back from Iceland and what stayed with me most wasn’t the glaciers, waterfalls or volcanoes. It was the culture.
There’s an Icelandic phrase, “Takk fyrir daginn,” which means “Thank you for spending the day with me.” Think about that for a moment. It reflects a deep appreciation for another person’s time and the connection you’ve shared.
Isn’t that beautiful? It reflects something I’ve always believed: people before things.
While Western culture seems obsessed with the next Instagram must-have and the disposable culture that comes with it, Iceland reminds us that what truly matters is much simpler.
Also impressive, Icelanders work with their climate rather than against it. There’s a Scandinavian saying, embraced in Iceland as well: “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.”
Icelandic society is truly admirable: an unprecedented commitment to gender equality, exceptionally high literacy rates, and a renewed dedication to environmental stewardship.
Icelanders seem to move through life with purpose, calm and appreciation for each other.
Thank you, Iceland, for the reminder.
