5 signs you're doing okay in Canada
You’re building a life even if it still feels “in progress.”
Things like paying your bills, figuring out transit, grocery shopping, taxes, school, or work routines may seem ordinary, but they’re big adjustments when living in a different country.
You can handle hard days without completely falling apart.
Missing home, feeling lonely during winter, struggling with school or work, or feeling behind compared to others is common. Doing okay doesn’t mean never struggling — it means you keep moving despite it.
You’ve started creating your own support system.
Maybe it’s classmates, coworkers, a partner, online friends, church/community groups, or even one trusted person. Having even a small circle in Canada is a strong sign you’re settling in.
You notice growth in yourself.
You might be more independent, better at communication, more confident navigating systems, or stronger emotionally than when you first arrived. A lot of immigrants don’t notice how much they’ve grown because they’re focused on surviving.
You still have goals for your future here.
Whether it’s finishing school, building a career, saving money, traveling, getting PR, or simply wanting stability — having hope and plans for yourself is a sign you haven’t given up.
And one more thing: many people in Canada look “put together” but are also struggling quietly with finances, loneliness, career pressure, or uncertainty. Progress here is usually slower and less glamorous than social media makes it seem.
