Orca Fest was about more than good food and great company this year. Thanks to everyone who grabbed a plate at the BBQ, you helped raise $1,812 for North Island Community Services Society.

These funds will go directly toward Shannon Llewellyn’s Family Connections programs, which include Promising Babies and CAPC (Canadian Action Program for Children). Both programs operate as weekly drop-ins in Port McNeill and Port Hardy, providing valuable support, resources, and connection for local families.

We are so grateful to be part of a community that shows up for each other, one plate at a time. Thanks again to everyone who joined us!

"The debate over salmon farming has, for decades, been misleadingly framed as a choice between protecting wild salmon or supporting aquaculture. For the rural, coastal First Nations who have salmon farming in their traditional territory, it's not one or the other — we do both every day."

—Isaiah Robinson, Deputy Chief Councillor of the Kitasoo Xai'xais Nation and spokesperson for the First Nations for Finfish Stewardship Coalition

"First Nations who have salmon farming in their traditional territory want an immediate reversal of the 2029 net pen ban and the implementation of our plan to increase Indigenous leadership, ownership, and stewardship in the salmon aquaculture sector." — Isaiah Robinson, Deputy Chief Councillor

In his latest op-ed for the Vancouver Sun, Deputy Chief Councillor Isaiah Robinson makes a clear call for the future of our waters: true reconciliation means respecting First Nations leadership and decision-making in our own territories.

Through the Kitasoo Xai'xais Innovation Plan, we have demonstrated that sustainable finfish aquaculture directly supports community vitality while prioritizing wild salmon protection.

Where should fish p**p? 💩

Good salmon farming starts long before a fish sees the ocean. Careful broodstock selection, genetic screening, and years of research go into choosing the healthiest fish to breed from. From there, they spend their first stages of life on land, in hatcheries built to keep them healthy and protected, cared for by teams who've spent years learning how to do this well. Innovation starts with a single healthy egg.

We believe innovation isn't a department or a checkbox. It's how our people think, every day, whether they're checking a pen at sunrise or asking how something could be done better. Innovation is a mindset, and it belongs to the people who live it.
