Land-based closed containment salmon farming is often presented as a simple replacement for ocean-based farming. But the evidence suggests the reality is more complex.

A BC government assessment found that while land-based salmon farming has potential, significant challenges remain—including high capital costs, energy demands, infrastructure requirements, and questions around large-scale commercial viability.

The future of sustainable salmon production won't come from a single "silver bullet." It will require a mix of solutions, including continued innovation in marine farming, semi-closed systems, land-based technologies, and fish health management.

Good policy starts with good science—not slogans.
