Buy Canadian. But what happens when we stop producing Canadian?

As B.C.’s farmed salmon production declined, Canada imported more than $765 million worth of Atlantic salmon in 2025, according to Statistics Canada. Suppliers include countries such as Norway and Chile.

Those are dollars that could help support Canadian workers, coastal businesses and families right here at home.

Reducing salmon farming in B.C. doesn’t remove farmed salmon from Canadian plates. It leaves more room for salmon raised somewhere else.

If we’re serious about buying Canadian, strengthening food security and supporting coastal communities, we need to support the people who grow our food.

Buy Canadian starts with making it possible to produce Canadian.

People who care for fish. People who maintain equipment and operate vessels. People building careers and raising families in coastal communities.

When we talk about the future of salmon farming in B.C., we need to talk about their future, too.

Look at the people in this photo. Each brings a different skill to the job. Each has a life beyond it: family, friends, plans, and a place in their community.

The proposed end of open net-pen salmon farming in BC by 2029 is often discussed in terms of technology and timelines. It also raises a deeply personal question for the people doing this work: What happens to us?

They deserve a meaningful part in the conversation about their future.

Every dollar generated on a BC salmon farm doesn't stay on the farm. It moves throughout the supply chain (processors, feed producers, transport operators, net builders, divers, mechanics, and fuel docks) supporting communities all along the coast. It's more than a ripple effect for the people who live in these communities, it's their livelihood.
