Feeding your horse’s health from the inside out matters. Studies show that more than 80% of a horse’s immune system is directly correlated with the health of the microbiome. Supporting that gut health matters more than you know and there’s lots of little things you can do daily to help:
- Allow your horse to have proper pre, pro, and postbiotics. Prebiotics are feeding the existing bacteria properly: supportive yeasts, minerals, and amino acids. Probiotics come from all the living organisms consumed by grazing on different grass, weeds, leaves, and forage type—so give your horses proper pasture and space for turnout. Postbiotics are the natural shed on all the healthy pre and probiotics they consume. With an unstable microbiome and unhealthy postbiotic shed can result in increased infections, poor performance, stomach upset, and many other issues.
- Increased turnout is beneficial for the digestive tract, as well as blood flow, which the absolutely gut requires to operate effectively.
- Low pro-inflammatories; read your feed labels and be cautious how much extruded grain your horse is eating and what your extrudes consist of.
- Respect the temperature. As we slowly transition into Spring, make sure to do some appropriate research on Heat Stress and how it is detrimental to the gut. Avoid exercise on hot days (and cold ones, for the lungs!)

Happy horses are healthy horses!
