Springvalley Annie Oakley VG86. She turned 12 this past January and although she definitely looks an old lady, she is happy to be enjoying another spring! Annie is tough as nails and in her long life gave me 30 kids!! She raised Triplets in 2022, at the age of 8, followed by twins at 9 and one last surprise doeling at the age of 10, before I retired her. Annie has always been a fierce mom and a rare doe who I knew I could leave nursing triplets and still end up with three nice kids. She has no teeth left and her biggest weakness, her feet, are definitely starting to let her down now, but for now at least, she is enjoying a return to warm weather and green grass. Soak it all up Annie, you deserve it ❤️

It was a LONG winter keeping everything running around the dairy farm this year. I lost track of how long it’s been since I updated here!
We had a great kidding season here in mid December, thankfully before the extreme cold settled in. This was one of the smallest groups I’ve kidded in many years as well, which is a better fit with the many other tasks at hand each day looking after the dairy farm. These kids have grown well and been healthy through all the weather swings. True to their sire, STJ Lincoln VG89, this kid crop has consistently strong twists with plenty of muscle shape, which something I wanted to add to my does who are consistently strong bodied and wide based. We will see how they all keep developing through weaning and into the spring.

They’ve been out in the yard and pasture all summer long, but today’s rain and the forecast for the week is bringing them in overnight for the first time this fall.

You might have heard the reference to the twist on a goat, here’s a great explanation of what that is. Be aware that in goats heavily fed with grain, that twist can look deeper due to fat deposit rather than muscle. An illusion of a deep twist can also commonly be accomplished using hair with good fitting, something to be aware of in goats that have been clipped/fitted.

We hear “twist” the most often in sheep- but every animal has one. It is basically the seam where the muscle of the hip come together at their most posterior point. That line will extend downward from just under the tail or dock, and wrap around under the animal. Depth of twist is an indicator of muscle and mass in an animals hind quarters; but be careful. Look for tone and shape. Because a deep twist can also be an indicator of fat.
