In 2000, Duane Holm decided to expand his farming operation to include the growing and harvesting of potatoes. Duane bought a small well established operation from Vic and Ann Lang of Brockton, when they decided to retire. At that time, the Lang’s were growing potatoes on about 30 acres and supplying area restaurants and grocers with their fresh, locally grown potatoes. Duane continued this operat
ion and also began growing registered potato seed for Ontario growers. This soon became his major focus and grew his business that now grows seed on over 300 acres of land. His seed is shipped to growers all over Canada and the United States including California, Florida, Idaho and PEI. His seed business grew so rapidly that he had to put the packing and distributing end of his business on the back burner in 2006 to focus more on the stringent conditions that had to be met to produce quality registered seed potatoes at an international level. After much expansion and growth in the following years, Duane, his wife Lesley and his two children Wyatt and Racheal now operate a successful and busy farm that not only grows potatoes but other cash crops including corn, beans and wheat. Wyatt and Racheal are sixth generation farmers, whose ancestors settled on the Holm family farm, just down the road, over 140 years ago. Ever since Duane decided to shut down the packing end of his business, the demand to buy locally grown potatoes did not diminish. In fact, every year since he stopped, Duane received urgings from locals to sell his potatoes once again. In early 2014, Duane decided he would commit a percentage of his potatoes to be packed and distributed to local stores again so they can be enjoyed by the very people that have supported him over the last 15 years. Holm Potato Farms is proud to be able to supply the area with locally grown potatoes once again, and THANKS everyone who has supported their efforts over the years! And next time you are in the produce department of your favourite grocer or sitting down enjoying a nice meal at your restaurant of choice, ask for Holm Potatoes. Nothing beats the freshness and quality of a Holm Potato.
