Life lately ❤️

Hi guys! Fern and I are currently in the Armstrong area, helping with a big move 📦

We’re going to be in and out of cell service & WiFi for a bit as we relocate up into the woods, but I’ll be checking in here and sharing to stories whenever I can!

I’m halfway through writing and putting together a Patreon post/private check-in and update that I’ll try to have up as soon as possible, especially after reaching our September goal of 150 Patrons recently 🥹!! (We made it to 155! You guys are crazy, and freaking amazing haha).

Seeing Patreon grow for the first time in a long time has been so inspiring and hopeful for me, and I have a few things planned for our community in the not too distant future! The link to sign up is always in our bio, if you ever want to join us 😉

Fern and I are having a lot of fun out here in the North Okanagan so far, but we’ll be back down in the South on Anarchist Mountain after Thanksgiving.

Love love LOVE you guys! So so SO much ❤️ Thank you for following and supporting our journey through this life!! We are so lucky.

Good morning Grumble Farm, happy Tuesday ❤️

We’re away from the Hayloft on Anarchist Mountain for a couple of weeks, but we’ll be back after Thanksgiving (I haven’t posted about the Hayloft to the grid yet, so if you haven’t been catching our stories, this will probably make no sense to you)

I just wanted to share this super cute photo of Fern I took in the car yesterday while wishing you all a peaceful and grounded day ahead. xoxo

P.S. We only need 4 more Patrons to reach our goal of 150 members before the end of September (!!) I’ve never been very good at setting goals, but seeing support flooding in to help us get there has been pretty damn cool.

The link to our Patreon is always in our bio, I wonder if we can get to 150 today? Either way, we love you all so very much ❤️

Only those who have gone through caring for a dog in super seniorhood really understand accommodating for a decline in mobility.

At this point, I’ve basically seen it all, and Fern is doing incredibly well for her age (one month shy of 16).

Yes, I have a stroller for her, as most small-breed senior dog guardians do. It makes it so that we can still enjoy longer walks outside together. I don’t do it because I’m treating my dog like a human child, as I often get criticized for, or because she’s lazy, as people often comment.

I’ve enjoyed walking my dogs on and off leash immensely over the years, and it’s tough seeing other people out with their active, agile, and younger dogs enjoying walks and hikes together. But I know that eventually, they’ll get there one day too, and then maybe they’ll understand a little bit better. You have to make adjustments and accommodations to the best of your ability, and gradually, over time, you find yourself slowing down to their speed. It’s about respecting this stage of their life, which is so fleeting, and having the awareness to meet them exactly where they’re at, not the other way around.

I like to take Fern out of her stroller and let her walk for stretches at a time. At the hayloft property — where we are currently living — there is a beautifully paved, long and winding driveway that is wonderful for meandering down with Fern tootling behind, at her own pace. I love to watch her in awe and reverence, for just how well she’s doing at her age, despite a little wobbliness.

I don’t care if people don’t understand, either in real life or on the internet. Your relationship with your senior dog is so indescribably personal and intimate, and it belongs to the two of you only. Nobody can touch it ❤️

Love you guys.

Fern and I have spent the last three weeks sitting a beautiful rural acreage up in the mountains just East of Osoyoos, British Columbia. While we’ve been here, we’ve been staying in a converted hayloft above the horse barn, and it’s been such a cool and unique experience.

But it’s been a long and lonely stretch up here on Anarchist Mountain (yes, the mountain is literally called Anarchist Mountain — how on-brand is that?)

Whenever I’m sitting rural properties for longer than a week or so, I start to get a little antsy-pants with cabin fever after not seeing or interacting with other humans; eventually, the isolation really starts to get to your head.

I’ve been taking daily drives all the way down the mountain just to pick up a thing or two at the grocery store so I can exchange a smile or two with strangers.

The other thing I’ve been doing to try and keep my mental health in check is going for off-property walks around the “neighborhood” with Fern in her stroller.

These are just a few photos of our walks together over the past few weeks out here in southern interior British Columbia; walks that have had me feeling very grateful for Fern’s company as we continue traveling the long road Home together ❤️

❤️ I’m going to be mentioning Patreon a lot moving forward whenever I post. Grumble Farm has been very active on Patreon since early 2021, but I’ve been pretty bad at mentioning it consistently over the years.

Support peaked in May of 2023 when Jonas died, where we reached 250 Patrons. Now, we’re at 131 thanks to everyone who joined recently, and I’d really love to build it back up again (if anything, to prove to myself that it’s possible).

If you’ve enjoyed following along with our story so far, consider joining — there’s a lot more to this story than is ever possible to share here on Instagram, and the intentional support for our sharing means the world to me.

There are multiple tiers to chose from depending on what you feel called to offer. I see your name pop up in my inbox the moment you become a Patron, and I do a little happy dance every time.

The link to our Patreon is in the comments. Love you guys!

Greetings from The Hayloft on Anarchist Mountain as Fern & I start our day together 🌞

I love when she wakes up all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, even if she’s temporarily rendered blind by the sun LOL
