Last year's work - checking on the lines and loving the growth!

Last year, heading out on the water to deploy the lines and buoys to hold the kelp line. Weather was with us, and we had amazing help. The kelp was in the capable (kelp-able?) hands of Lloyd White and Stephen White.

While the kelp is growing on the spools in the nursery (which it will be doing until about the end of November) it's time for us to look back on last season, when we did our first experimental outplanting. Here's Varrick, looking like a man with a plan! (which he was)

Okay, she's ready for her closeup!! Look at these beauties growing! We've gone from spots to gorgeous in 40 to 60 days.

We were also able to compare and contrast our spools with the ones made by the Marine Institute. Robust and scattered vs mild and even. (Perhaps some anthropomorphism going on here)

As you can see, the spools were going from white, to greenish, and we were starting to see some real growth!

Last time I posted we were looking at some little brown spots. Sure, they didn't look like much, but with the proper water temperature, nutrition and care they grew to this in 22 days!!! Okay, I will admit that this still doesn't look like much, but it's so neat to see the kelp taking shape on the spools.

Close up of spool twine, and kelp beginning to latch on and grow. Feel free to shout "look at those babies" and pump your fist in the air, because we sure did. Next post will be about them growing, and then out planting in the ocean.
