They just keep coming. Some of our good ol' girls and a few heifers still giving us healthy, vigorous calves. This place is heifer calf central this year! Only a handful of bull calves so far.

The heifers are getting it done this year. Their strong maternal traits showed in spades and their calves are hitting the ground running.

Keep it up, ladies! We're lovin' it! Show 'em how its done!

When the weather is nice and the cows all decide its time. The girls let loose this week. I'm run off my feet trying to keep up. Lord knows I'm a sucker for bottle calves but this is getting a bit much. Hopefully these ladies give me a bit to catch my breath before laying into it again!

Until then, calf spam for your viewing pleasure!

With Kristan away yesterday, the cows thought it was a good time to really lean into calving and we had as many calves yesterday as we've had to date, including a set of twins born hours apart. Mom likes both calves so we'll just have to make sure they're getting enough grub. Bad Mom loves her calf again this year and we should probably give her a new name.

Lots of steps yesterday and this is only the beginning! Calving season 2026 is ramping up!

I just got back from 2 weeks in Paraguay, South America. I have family there, most of whom have ranches and when they asked what I wanted to see, I said cattle operations. I want to compare and learn from how they operate. They often suffer severe droughts and I was amazed at their resilience. They think we have it bad because we feed 200 days a year, I can't imagine collecting rain water off solar panels to utilize every drop received.

It was amazing and like every cattle operation, they were eager to show off their cattle and answer any questions I might have and sit me down for a drink and some food. I visited small ranches, large ranches, private and cooperative operations, stockyards, feedlots, research farms and even a new semen collection/freezing facility.

I came away with some ideas and there will be a whole new appreciation of water on our place and some experimenting with different ideas that this trip has generated.

Many thanks to Kristan for staying home to keep up with lambing and Kally McRae for helping him. I promise to plan the next one at a better time of year. Promise.

Believe it or not, I took this picture at 8pm, in the dark. Technology is amazing...and a bit unsettling.....

Friendly 44 had to check out Kristan's pail and get a scratch. Rosie was not far away. These girls are always the first in line for everything.

Where industries meet....

Our area sees a lot of oil and gas activity. And winter is "go time" around here for a lot of major construction projects. The Peace is also well known to have a strong agricultural industry as well and often, these interests collide.

Today, we brought the rest of our cows home...right through a major pipeline construction project near our place. We made arrangements with the oil company rep and the contractor and let them know ahead of time that we'd be through. They offered any help they could and all road traffic was respectful and patient. The crews on site were quiet and stayed out of the way as we went by.

We did what we could to stay off their work areas and keep the girls moving so they could get on with their day.

Kristan and I have both worked the majority of our adult lives in oil and gas. A lot of it on pipeline projects. And a lot of the people we have worked with are also involved in agriculture. We see both sides. We believe that good communication and respect allows everyone to get their jobs done, even when we have to share the land.

Hats off to the crews on the Stoddart Creek Rd. with and for showing respect today while we worked too.

Hats off to the old, broke horses who can get the things done.

This guy and I have seen a lot of miles together and he is still the go-to when there is "business" at hand. He goes to work and doesn't quit till its done, though he may share his 'opinion' with you when its getting boring.

They say if you're lucky enough to get a good horse in your lifetime, you're lucky enough. He's number 2 so I probably should go buy a lottery ticket.

So, here's to 'em. May they never sore up or take a bad step. May they always fill their lungs with fresh air and their bellies with good feed and may I never cause them to resent me or their jobs.

When the leaves are gone and so is the grass. The girls waited impatiently while we extended electric fence so they could get some extra fall grazing in.

They were so happy and are we. Another drought year under our belts and we still have so much to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving, all!
