🌎 Happy Earth Day! 🌍

Today is a great reminder that small actions can make a really big impact.

At our store we make sure that all of our food waste is put to good use. Instead of ending up in a landfill, it is used to help feed people and animals, and is utilized as composting material.

Anything that is unable to be sold but is still good to eat is donated locally to the food bank and community fridge. If it can't be donated for human consumption, it is picked up by a local farm three times per week through our partnership with Loop.

Thank you for helping us to divert food waste for a more sustainable future!

Celebrating Earth day with a Loop pick-up at Good's Independent . Our expecting Momma Gemmy really appreciated the boost from expired Boost and cream cheese.

We live being able to divert so much food that otherwise would end up in landfills.

We are devastated to announce the loss of Poppa MacD.

Lawrence was a man bigger than life, someone whos smiles were infectious. MacDougall Farm started with him in the late 70's. Goats named Buttersctoch & Missy, a sheep called Elvira. A pig or two a year, chickens. A centrury farm and a dream of self-sufficiency.

He loved seeing his son and this farm girl living his dreams and lending us a hand wherever needed.

We may have a few more head of animals (and another goat named missy), but his dreams of self-sufficiency and community will live on.

Quite a happy suprise yesterday!

Sometime between night check and morning chores, Loretta (who I thought was at least a month out) delivered, cleaned and has this HUGE ram lamb outside in the pasture with the herd.

I looked outside and was like, wait- I dont have 2 white lambs.

This day old ram is already bigger than the 3 week old twins.

It's Family day (or Islander day here on the island)

Today I want to share a story about these two old farmers who sowed the seeds of MacDougall Farm.

My Great Uncle's Donald and Billy MacPhee of Bonshaw.

Uncle Billy along with my Nana (his sister) started my love of gardening and foraging as soon as I could walk. Hours were spent in the woods and fields. Uncle Billy is also the only other person that had, and understood my connection with animals, he was always taming and sneaking critters for me pet.

Uncle Donald was a WWII Navy vetern, he was a man of very few words who believed that actions spoke louder than words. He was a hard worker who I never once heard complain. He taught me that a job worth doing is worth doing right, and to do work the because it needs doing.

Ever thankful that these two (along with MANY others) encouraged and nurtured a love of the land in me.

There's been a few new faces at the farm this week.

Last Thursday Missy delivered a set of twins, a chocolate brown bucking with nubian ears and toggenburg wattles and a white belly band and a black doeling with tan and white patches, blue eyes and lamancha ears. The buckling was huge and poor Missy needed a little help with him.

Tuesday Lola (finally) presented us with a set of Lambs. A darling little white female that looks just like her and a sweet black ram with a small white patch.

The goats will be available to new homes in 11 weeks if anyone is interested.

First set of this years lambs are doing great! They are cute as can be too.
