Looking like a bit of a wet end, to the week but we are going ahead with our opening of the Upick on Friday September 4th.
Normal hours will continue with a 10am to 5pm schedule.
The Williams Pride (1st two pictures)are a light crop this year but the size and quality are excellent. Every year, more people discover them for baking and phenomenal apple sauce.
Then, the following Friday of September 11th, our Paulareds will start their season. Again, excellent quality and size!

Productive day! Janine drove the ride-on, while I kneeled in the wagon and threw tree wraps beside each new tree. Then I went back out and put them on.
They were reused wraps that had to be straightened out and then rolled up, ahead of time.
Quite a job but 235 trees are protected from mice, with no bait stations full of poison, used in our orchard.

Planting Red Oaks and English Oaks from acorns, in the 1990s, is paying off. Lots of seedlings sprouting up, all over the orchard.
Some will have to be dug up and moved and some will need a pruning and a support stake but alot of them can stay right where the squirrel planted them.

Extremely busy weekend!
Saturday morning, we purchased 43 studs. The 2x6 were chopped and sliced into 260 stakes. The stakes were sharpened, edges chamfered and treated with WaterGuard.
Sunday morning, out we went, back to work. The 4 foot stakes were driven a foot into the ground at each tree. The tree got a quick summer pruning and inspection for pests and then the stake got a hole drilled in it and the tree tied up. Glad to have that job done, as the new growth on the little trees was bending them and threatening to break the graft unions. Next up, mouse guards...😞

Trees got a drink today. Some rain is predicted but they haven't been able to predict anything in quite a while so we did it ourselves. It was a hot day in the field.

Last fall, some of our customers were a bit shocked and disappointed to see that we had taken out our Russets, Northern Spy and one row of Empire. They never recovered from Fiona and had such a pitiful crop, that we knew it was time for change. Interestingly, the damage was substantial but localized in the very center of the orchard, as if a storm cell had touched down.
We pulled the plug in August and with alot of sweat and black flies, it was cleaned up before the orchard opened.
We are happy to announce that we have replaced our Russets and put in 5 new varieties, as well!
Planted on a more dwarfing rootstock, in a short couple of years, we will have added Sunrise, GingerGold, Golden Gala, Royal Red Gala and Honeycrisp.
Along with our recently planted Geneva CrabApple and Crimson Crisp, we will have 19 varieties for our Upick and Cider.

Wintermoor Orchard will officially be closing the gate this evening. Its been a long couple of weeks for us, with unpredictable weather, but so many happy visitors.
Thank you to everyone who came out to see the blossoms but in particular, the many professional photographers who worked with the weather, to accommodate so many families and make so many beautiful memories.
There are still some spots in the orchard, with blossoms, but petal fall is well under way and the development of fruitlets is already set on some of the early varieties.
We hope to see you this fall, for an amazing apple picking experience!
