Over the last few weeks Barb has introduced you to us, the crew behind Island Meadow Farm. Now it is our turn to introduce you to our fearless leader!
Barb is well known in the business of flower growers. With 35 plus years as a member of the Canadian Association of cut flower growers, she is respected for her knowledge but also for skillful mentoring future flower growers.
The Jewell family introduced Barb to the business of flowers and she has taken it from there. She continues the tradition with having her grandchildren become integral members of the flower team.
While managing a thriving flower farm Barb has also been a constant presence at Jewell’s Country Market since its inception.
Flower farming is not for the faint of heart
-weather season ending unpredictables can show up at any time, successional planting to insure blooms are ready when needed are only a couple of concerns constantly at the top of mind.
I can speak for the team saying how proud we are of Barb for her success in this business and the person she has become.
And thank you all for following Island Meadow Farm and making us part of your flower experience!
Barb Facts:
• Did you know Barbs first passion was
NOT Flowers it was Horses
• Yes, she talks to the flowers and sometimes sings!
• She is a Ho**er- rugs that is!

Hi PEI! This summer sure has been different ! The weather has been, and remains a challenge with yesterday’s severe thunderstorm being one of them. Opposite from recent years of dry conditions, we have been challenged with rain, humidity, temperatures from high to low. Through it all, we have been able to fill our orders and keep our farm stand stocked. As with all farming, the weather dictates crop quality.

We are presently drying many stems for the upcoming season. With the high humidity we were forced to closing the Meadow Barn door and install a dehumidifier. So far it seems to be working. When the weather allows we will open the door for browsing our dried offerings!

Thanks to everyone for stopping by ! As a small Island business we appreciate you 💗.

Hello everyone! Even though the door to the meadow barn is closed due to the humid weather, there are lots of flowers available on the Blue wagon! Glad bunches are on sale for $10! 💐 💙

Hi PEI ! Happy Sunday! Lind has been part of our farm team the past few summers. Lind brings an energy that most people can only dream of having …. Caring, curious, knowledgeable, and fun, I’m blessed to have Lind as a colleague and a forever friend 💙🫶🏻🌿🪴🥰

If you’re reading this, we already have a place in common that’s pretty special to both of us.

Island Meadow Farm has been a backbone and inspiration through the beginning years of my horticulture career. Barb especially has been a huge role model and navigator for me, and she means the world to me.

I’m not at the farm as often as I’d like this year, but I always enjoy my time here and the tasks I get assigned.

My favourite part of growing plants is sculpting them into beautiful specimens. I also really enjoy problem-solving and figuring out how to repair and bring plants back to their best. I also love getting to know the wildlife and learning about their lives too.

There’s always something around the farm to be inspired by and share with others. I love that we can all come together to enjoy nature and appreciate the many hands that help cultivate it.

Hi PEI! Many of you are familiar with Mary Ella or have seen the results of her work in many of our bouquets, and arrangements. Mary Ella has a way with color, balance, and interpretation of a clients floral vision, which is very appreciated ! Attention to detail, especially when we are meeting with clients, has me very dependent on her abilities! she is at ease creating large pieces as well as the finer details such as corsages and boutonnières.
Of course as she is my granddaughter I’m especially proud and thankful to have her here throughout the spring summer and fall. She begins her final year of high school in a few weeks and we have heard some rumours of horticultural vibes in her future! Thanks Mary Ella for your dedication and putting up with Nana Farmer! 💕

Hello, I'm Mary-Ella and I've been working with my grandmother at Island Meadow Farm for 5 years now. I love working with the flowers and getting to make custom bouquets, and arrangements, they're a fun challenge! I also love getting to know all of the people I work with here, and all of the familiar faces of our regular customers.

Hi PEI! Today we are introducing Joy ! As a Farmher who has lived all her life on a dairy farm, both at her home near Bridgetown NS then Frenchfort PE. Helpful, kindhearted, generous, thoughtful, fun, friendly, and a born worker, all in one special lady! Joy brings with her a big heart and we are so blessed to welcome her in our farm family💓👩‍🌾💐💓

My name is Joy Stewart, and I’m a recently retired dairy farmer. For several years, I had been getting CSA bouquets from Barb, and they always love the beautiful variety of flowers she had to offer. That love of flowers eventually led me to spending time at the flower farm, where I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much.
Barb is the wealth of knowledge and is always so kind and generous about sharing what she knows. My favourite flowers are Dahlias, and Barb has been especially generous, and helping me get my own dahlia garden started at home. I’ve really enjoyed learning from her and putting some of that knowledge to use in my own garden.
At the farm, I’m happy doing just about any job that needs to be done, whether it’s watering, weeding, harvesting flowers, or trying my hand at making bouquets.
The flower farm is such a special place to work, made even better by the fantastic group of people there. Barb may say that she needs us, but I think we probably need her and the flower farm even more. It’s a place I truly enjoy being, and I feel very fortunate to be a small part of it.

Hi PEI! Erica has been with us now for the past three summers. She is a dedicated 4H member with Dunsaffange Marshfield and was honoured as 4H member of the year. She also did an excellent job with her 4H speech ‘life of a Farmher’ as this is the year of the Woman Farmer her speech topic made us all proud👩‍🌾!
We are happy to have Erica with us again this season, always willing to take on new tasks! And she sees what needs to be done and gets right to it! A natural future ‘farmher’ for sure! 🌸🌻💐

Hi, My name is Erica Nijhof. I am 13, and this is my third year working with Barb and the flowers. This is the first year working with my sister, and I enjoy being able to boss her around! I really like all the people I work with on the farm, and learning new skills from them. When I am not at the farm I like to read, and to babysit the neighbor kids. This year I have started making bouquets and watering the flowers in the green house.

I live on a dairy farm with my family in York and I like to do gymnastics and play softball when I am at home.
So far my favorite job on the farm has been cutting the flowers and I just learned how to make posie bouquets.
I really like to work with the Sweetpea flowers because they smell good!

Hi PEI! We have been so fortunate to have Madison home with us for the past few weeks. as you know, Maddie is my granddaughter and has been helping her at the farm since she was 10 years old. She started with bundling sweet peas with my mom, and more recently along with her cousin Mary Ella they created some beautiful large wedding pieces on their own! We are so happy to have had her back with us. So many old times and memories! Thank you Maddie for taking your holiday time to help out ! Nana Farmer so happy to have you 💓 ###

Hello everyone, my name is Madison and I am the oldest of Barbs 4 granddaughters. I have had the pleasure of working at the flower farm from the time I was 10 years old.
In 2023 I moved to Alberta but every summer since I always come back to the flower barn. This summer marked 12 years that I have been apart of the flower farm in some way! I am so grateful to be able to come back every summer and play with all the flowers again, and most importantly spend time with all of our wonderful flower family in the barn. Best of the best if I do say so myself!
It has been a pleasure to gain so much knowledge and experience by working along side Barb these last 12 years. Here’s to 12 more.💐🥰
