๐Ÿ€ Connecting youth to agriculture! ๐Ÿšœ๐Ÿ„

Central 4-H members joined us for a farm tour earlier this month, splitting modern dairy farming at Eastview Dairy and diving into the history of antique equipment at Taters, Tractors & Tales. It was an awesome mix of hands in learning and discovering how farming had evolve over time.

Huge thank you to ADL for the chocolate milk donation and to our generous hosts for welcoming the group! ๐Ÿ’š

Harvest 101: Combine
PEI farmers grow over 250,000 metric tonnes of grain crops, mainly barley, wheat, oats, and corn. But how is it all harvested? Enter one of the larger pieces of equipment in the farmerโ€™s yard: the combine! This harvester *combines* (hence the name) three operations into one: reaping (cutting the stalks), threshing (separating the actual grain from the stalks), and winnowing (removing the remaining debris), which would have required separate pieces of equipment and hours of manual labour for farmers of the past. This leaves farmers with pure grain in their storage tanks, and straw left behind on the fields. The straw is collected and baled, making great bedding for livestock like cattle and horses.

(Combine pronounced KOM-byne)

These herds of cows and calves are not only cute; they have an important role in improving soil health. The cows graze all summer, leaving behind manure as they go. Farmers move them from pasture to pasture, a process known as rotational grazing, incorporating the manure into the soil with the step of each hoof. This manure is rich in nutrients, improving the health of the soil below, and offering he;ping the pasture grasses to grow and replenish before the cattle are brought back anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks later.

Farming is more than driving tractors and feeding livestock; it takes a whole team of support to grow our delicious food sustainably. This team includes engineers like Kurtis, who survey field sites and work with farmers to understand how water moves through their ecosystem, and what they can do to make their soil stronger and reduce erosion on their farm.
