Looking to get into breeding pigs?
Delilah is the unicorn of pig mommas
We have had her for 3 years, she has had 5 litters for us. She is a hands free momma but she will also let you in there if you want to be part of it (farrowing). She has excellent mothering instincts and she would do really well going to a family who wants to learn about pig farrowing. She’s an easy keeper, doesn’t complain too much, loves belly rubs (will stretch out and flop over if you give her some rubs, and she takes care of her babies well.
We learned a lot with her and are resisting rehoming her but we’re downsizing and she’s one of the ones we’ve chosen to rehome.
She will come as “exposed” with confirmation of breeding date and that she has not come back into heat, but officially proving pregnancies in pigs takes a vet which we will not be doing. She has consistently had babies day 118 and we are diligent with the tracking.
She usually has between 9-12 piglets and makes the best nests we’ve ever seen for them.
She lets you know when she’s uncomfortable with you getting near babies but she’s not unpredictable or aggressive. (Specifically, she will just nudge at you and kinda lean on you and you can tell she’s telling you to give her space)
Only downside is that she is approx 6 years old and some would consider that old but she is still going strong, she doesn’t lose too much weight from nursing and hasn’t had any health issues whatsoever. She’s just a seasoned mom. Exactly what you want if you’re new to all of this.
She’s a mixed breed. We were told there’s some York in her but she’s on the small side. Her size is a benefit to you and her as she’s able to get around her babies safely. She’ll teach you a lot about what a good sow looks like.
