The short answer is no, but there are salt-free water treatment systems. The difference comes down to how they work.

A traditional water softener uses a process called ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium, the minerals responsible for hard water. These systems use salt or potassium chloride to regenerate and keep working effectively.

Salt-free systems, on the other hand, generally condition the water rather than remove the hardness minerals. Some can help reduce scale buildup, but they don't actually soften your water.

If you're dealing with hard water, the right treatment starts with understanding what's in your water and what's causing the problem.

At Clean Water Specialists, we test your water, explain the results, and recommend a system that addresses your home's specific water problems.

If your shower doors never seem to stay clean, hard water may be the reason.

Hard water contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can leave behind scale, cloudy spots and buildup on glass, faucets and fixtures. You can scrub it off, but if the water itself isn’t treated, it keeps coming back.

The good news is that hard water can be treated. We can test your water, explain what’s causing the buildup, and recommend the right system for your home.

Less scrubbing. Less buildup. Better water throughout the house. 💧

Look familiar? 😦

While you can keep trying to scrub it away, the real fix starts with treating the water causing it. We can test your water, figure out what’s going on, and recommend the right solution for your home.

Let’s clean that up for you.

Many Nova Scotia homes have water issues they don’t know about.

Iron, manganese, sulphur, bacteria and hardness are common across the South Shore and HRM. Many homeowners live with these issues without realizing better water is possible.

If you rely on a well, it might be time to check it.

A simple water test shows what is really coming through your taps.

Clean Water Specialists has been helping local families since 1985 with testing and whole-home treatment systems.

Bacteria are tiny living organisms too small to be seen by the human eye. The only way to know if harmful bacteria are present is by having your water tested at an accredited laboratory. 🧪

You can't see it. You can't taste it. You can't smell it.

Testing for total coliforms and E. coli is recommended every 6–12 months. 📆

If harmful bacteria are detected, one of the most effective long-term treatment methods is an Ultraviolet (UV) Sterilizer System, which disinfects your water before it reaches your tap. 🚰
