Let’s talk about dug wells! 💧🕳️

Dug wells are very common in the Fraser Valley, especially in Ryder Lake and Sumas Mountain.

They can be great water sources and often work well for years.

Some pros:
✅ You can visually see the water level
✅ Easy to monitor year-round
✅ Pump installs are usually straightforward
✅ Maintenance and cleaning are manageable
✅ Suction pumps can sometimes be used if the water level is high

Some things to watch out for:
⚠️ Because they’re shallow, dug wells are almost always affected by surface water
⚠️ Bacteria is very common and water quality can fluctuate
⚠️ They can run dry during dry seasons

This photo shows us flow testing a dug well. Most engineers will only test dug wells during the driest months (August & September), which means the testing window is short.

Common issues we see:
• Bacteria
• Rotten egg (sulphur) smells
• Occasionally rodents entering the well

If you’re on a dug well, it’s a good idea to have it checked to make sure your water is safe.

Water test reports can look overwhelming, but they give important information about your water - including minerals, metals, and bacteria 🔍⁠

In this case, the total coliform result is 11, which is a fail ❌⁠
That means the water is not safe for consumption without treatment.⁠
⁠
Results like this are very common, especially on private water systems - and the good news is, the solution is usually simple ✅⁠

The Canadian Water Quality Association recommends testing your water every 6 months 🗓️ to stay ahead of issues and keep your water safe.⁠

Another solid install by the team 👊

This system is a 3-stage commercial water treatment setup designed and built entirely by AJ Pumps, treating flow rates up to 90 GPM.

What you’re seeing here:
• Blue housings: sediment filtration
• Large beige tanks: water softeners
• Black tanks (left): salt brine tanks used for softener regeneration
• UV system: final stage for bacteria removal, including E. coli and coliforms

For perspective, the average home typically uses around 10 GPM - this system is built for serious demand.

Big shoutout to Dylan, Yanni, Andy, and Cobe for the long days and countless hours that went into this one. Solid work all around.
