BIG things are happening over here and we are excited!! As some of you may have seen…it is true…

WE HAVE SOLD!!

This is by no means the end of this adventure for us, rather a pivot. Dennis and Tammy are moving onto enjoying their retirement 🌅. Michelle will continue to employ the skills she’s learned while growing . You can continue to follow her adventures here . Shawn and Melissa are on to their next big adventure (and Sammy too).

Scott and his family will be moving in! They are excited and keen to continue organically farming garlic and you have the opportunity to follow them .ca. Be sure to click the link, follow and share their new page!

So this is not the end for us. Just a new beginning. A fresh start. A clean slate. And while we’re all sad to see this amazing place go, we know it’s going to be in great hands. Furthermore, we’re excited to see what the future has in store for us!

Brussel Sprouts

Our family LOVES brussel sprouts and this is the first year I’ve been successful in growing them.

These long season brassicas have been the bane of my existence for 5 years. They are THE 👏🏻 MOST 👏🏻 DIFFICULT crop to grow organically! This is the first year I’ve succeeded in getting a crop off and it’s all about timing along with a healthy micro climate!

You see, this Christmas staple, starts its life in early summer indoors. It is then transplanted outside in the dog days of summer where it photosynthesizes its way through the remaining summer weeks until the plant itself becomes quite large. It’s only in the fall months that the tiny little heads begin to appear and mature in size.

That doesn’t sound so bad right?

WRONG 😑

You see, in the absence of a greenhouse, keeping the seedlings happy and thriving indoors in the heat of summer - providing exactly enough light and heat - without wilting them or even killing them from too much heat - challenged me for the first 2 years.

Year 3, I decided that I’d had enough and tried to direct sow them 🤦🏼‍♀️. That failed hard!

Year 4, I succeeded in sowing and growing healthy, young seedlings, but I transplanted too early. Not only was cabbage moth flying rampant in our parts, but a long drought set in and so did aphids. Not to worry though, a healthy plant can survive aphids providing the right other ingredients such as a healthy soil food web. Our Brussels survived, just in time for March.
