Planting dahlia cuttings looks a little different than planting tubers !
When we plant our cuttings here on the farm, we bury them DEEP — usually enough to get 2–3 sets of nodes underground. Those nodes are where the new tubers will form later in the season 🌱
Unlike tubers (which grow more tubers from the original tuber itself), cuttings create tubers from the buried leaf nodes where the leaves were removed before planting.
Cuttings also need a little more babying in the beginning:
• More water
• A bit of fertilizer
• Consistent moisture while they establish roots
We water ours twice a day — morning and night — especially during those first couple weeks on the farm.
And if you want a plant with lots of blooms, don’t forget to pinch your dahlias!
That’s pretty much it. Easy as that ✨
Watching one tiny cutting turn into a whole clump of tubers never gets old 🫶
