If we'd pay a little more attention to biology, a little less to chemistry and get past the crutch of agricultural pesticides, we'd have a much healthier food system (and planet). It's not as unattainable as you might think. We've been generating a full time living growing food and plants without pesticides for over four decades. Today's photos: Wood Warblers gleaning insects in our orchard and potato patch.

Home from the Pembroke Farmers Market with an empty truck... A generation ago markets weren't optional, they were how you got your weekly groceries in towns and cities across this nation. Excerpt below was from a 1940 letter my dad had sent to my mom in Timmins before they were married. Seven years earlier as part of a crew building Highway 17 he had been cleaning the inside of a cement mixer when another worker accidentally turned it on. Needless to say he was severely injured and as a result spent many years in hospital and a lifetime coping with osteomyelitis. During the war he ramped up the family farm output and was one of the top sellers of Victory Bonds in the country. The overall productivity and ingenuity of Canadian farmers was an essential part of the allies victory in the war. Perhaps it's time to get behind local producers once again. And if it's not grown in Canada consider leaving it on the shelf!

So much of growing your own food depends on timing. Assuming you transplanted good quality seedlings in May, and kept them well weeded and watered through July, large storage onions should be ready to harvest now. Leaving them in the ground too long in a rainy summer such as this, could invite pathogens which would reduce keeping quality. We got ours pulled, tied and hung up in a well-ventilated shelter just before this afternoons showers. They'll hang there till mid September when the tops are thoroughly dried and ready to be trimmed off to about 1/2" from the bulbs. From there we'll gently place them in these same bushel hampers and move to our basement cold room. Carefully handled, cured and stored, we'll have organic onions for table use through mid June. 8/16/26photo

We grow all of our dried 'soup beans' on these 3 tripods. This is an heirloom called 'Cherokee Red'. Growing food vertically is another excellent way to increase square foot yield. 8/7/26photo
