We've been enjoying raspberries with breakfast each morning for the past month and the Bumblebees are doing their best to keep them going for a while yet. If you're a bit intimidated by pruning, 'Heritage' is a good variety to grow. Just mow the row off completely in late fall and the canes that regrow in spring will be fruiting by late summer. A perfect day for getting next year's garlic into the ground. Note the clove spacing within the rows (Dorothy's left hand) and soil depth above each clove (right hand). A light dusting of kelp and rock phosphate before the bed is raked level. Then a few inches of pine needles for mulch and they're all set for winter. 10/6/26photo

📣 FINAL ‘On-Farm Pop Up Market’ before Thanksgiving: This Friday (Oct. 2nd). Order exactly what you want and pick it up at the time that works for you on Friday. We will accept requests in the order in which they arrive in our Connaught Nursery facebook message box, and shortly confirm with instructions for payment and pickup. Items will be removed from the list as they sell out, so check the list at the moment you are placing your order. Please don't forget to specify your pickup time for Friday (at least 4 hours ahead of your arrival) so we can have your order fresh-picked and ready to go.

Phenomenal growth on the Sweet Potatoes this summer... a single row of plants is at least 8' wide. It'll soon be time to harvest and cure your Sweet Potatoes. Here's how: Before we get a heavy frost, dig the tubers and place them carefully in baskets or boxes with black plastic loosely over top (check occasionally to see that they are not staying wet). Be careful not to bruise or scratch them. Place in a warm (27 C) spot (sunny window or sunroom are ideal) to cure for 10 - 14 days. Then take off the plastic and store at 15 C. Properly cured they should store up to a year and the flavour actually improves in storage as the starches gradually convert to sugar. 9/14/26photo

Another load of organic apples heading in from the orchard this morning... we'll have Wealthy, Spartan and Cortland in 3 litre baskets and half bushels at our 'Pop Up Market' this week. Our full Availability List which will include grapes, pears, plums and many, many vegetables and fresh cut herbs will drop tomorrow at 3 p.m. ;)
