I've read that toxoplasmosis can make mice and rats less afraid of cats, making them easier for the cats to catch.
I suppose it might make sense for it to have a similar effect on other mammals. Fascinating.
A natural anti-anxiety effect?

A parasite that can only reproduce inside a cat is making Yellowstone wolves bolder, more likely to leave their families, and 46 times more likely to become pack leaders. The wolves pick it up from cougar s**t. The infected wolves lead their packs into more cougar territory. The packs pick up more of the parasite. The loop does not end.
Connor Meyer, a University of Montana graduate student, and Kira Cassidy of the Yellowstone Wolf Project matched 26 years of blood samples against the behavioral records of 229 wolves. Every dispersal. Every leadership change. Every territory map drawn since the 1995 reintroduction. They tested the blood for antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, a single-celled organism that lives in the gut of cats, sheds in their f***s, and infects nearly any warm-blooded animal that encounters it. Then they checked whether the wolves that tested positive had done anything differently with their lives than the wolves that tested negative.
They had. Infected wolves were 11 times more likely to leave their pack. Infected males had a 50 percent chance of dispersing within six months of infection. Uninfected males took a median of 21 months to make the same decision. Dispersal is the most dangerous thing a wolf does short of fighting. A disperser walks alone through territories held by packs that will kill it on contact. Most dispersers die. The ones that survive establish new packs and breed. The infected wolves were choosing to take that risk earlier and more often.
They were also 46 times more likely to become pack leaders. Not twice as likely. Not five times. Forty-six. A pack leader decides where the group hunts, which drainages it enters, and which territories it challenges. A leader's decisions move 10 or 15 wolves across the landscape as a unit. If the leader carries a parasite that makes it more willing to push into cougar country, every wolf in the pack follows.
Toxoplasma gondii cannot complete its reproductive cycle inside a wolf. It needs a cat. In Yellowstone, the cat is the mountain lion. Meyer's team tested 62 cougars and found that 52 percent carried the parasite, rising to 73 percent in the most recent sampling period. Cougars shed Toxoplasma in their f***s. A wolf nosing through cougar s**t at a territorial boundary or a scrape site inhales or ingests the microscopic cysts. The infection takes hold. The wolf's behavior shifts.
In laboratory mice, the shift is crude and well documented. Infected mice lose their fear of cat urine. Some become attracted to it. They approach cats instead of fleeing. They get eaten. The parasite reaches its destination inside the stomach of the animal it needed to reach. The mouse was a vehicle. The fear was the lock. The parasite picked it.
In wolves, the mechanism is subtler but the pattern is the same. Wolves whose territories overlapped heavily with cougar range were nine times more likely to carry the infection than wolves with little overlap. Infected wolves dispersed faster and became leaders more often. Leaders chose where the pack traveled. If an infected leader was more willing to approach cougar territory, every subordinate in the pack walked through cougar s**t it would not have encountered under a different leader. More wolves got infected. Some of those wolves dispersed and became leaders of new packs. The cycle widened.
Meyer was careful with the claim. Toxo is not the only factor that predicts whether wolves will lead the pack, he said. It is one of many things that affect wolf behavior. Uninfected wolves still disperse. Uninfected wolves still become leaders. Both the male and female leaders of a pack were equally likely to test positive. The parasite does not create leaders. It appears to accelerate a decision the wolf was already capable of making, compressing the timeline from cautious to committed.
The study cannot prove causation. It is 26 years of correlation from the most closely monitored wolf population in the world. But the correlation is that a microscopic organism shed in cougar f***s is associated with the single strongest predictor of whether a wolf leaves its family, survives the dispersal, and ends up in charge of a pack whose movements it controls across a landscape it shares with the cat the parasite came from.
