The Scott Homestead

The Scott Homestead Living close to the way our ancestors lived: cooking from scratch and raising much of own food. More than soap!

I wanted to share some of the things we've been learning in the kitchen [and around our little homestead!] and trying to go back to the ways Gramma did things with healthy and natural products and healthy eating.

Yesterday started with a foggy morning, then on to processing some layer roosters we hatched out in the spring for dog food, then cleaning out the chicken/rabbit coops. The red bucket shows how much rain we had over the last few days and some proof our days are getting shorter.

Beautiful foggy morning at the homestead.

Forgot to take pictures and post about these the other day! Onions are pulled and drying for storage and there was a whole bunch of stinging nettle growing along the fence of the garden that I cut out and am drying for our apothecary (big word for our herbal medicine cabinet ☺️).

Make your own Chai tea blend that not just for flavour… but for health benefits too! 😋

Chai tea mix is not only delicious but also medicinal. You can also make a chai tea concentrate with this mix. Here is an easy recipe.

**Lights Out Alert: Bird Highway Returns This Weekend**

Here they come! While the fall bird migration peaks in our area during September, an early wave is likely Saturday night. The wind pattern is perfect for the birds, and they will likely take advantage and move across the entire Great Lakes region. More than 200 million birds are projected by the Birdcast model. It is possible that the bird surge will be much higher than that number. The reason why is because Birdcast uses data from the GFS computer model. That model shows a good wind flow for the birds, but the European computer model shows a great pattern for migratory birds. Either way, bird traffic should be high, but it has the potential to overperform. Saturday night is a good time to turn off those outdoor lights to help this early surge of birds navigate south.

Smart man. It’s worth the 23 minutes to watch.

Over the last few day we canned beets and made apple sauce and more apple scrap jelly out of a bunch of apples gifted to us by some dear friends. 💕😋. The next while it will be rabbits, roosters, finishing the beets, and carrots and whatever else we can forage from the homestead before winter ☺️.

We have decided to sell off our rabbits. We have 5 Californians available.
Breeding buck (dark markings) is 4 years
Oldest breeding female (all white) is 4 years
Her niece, also a breeding female (dark markings), is 2 yrs
And two 10.5 week olds — one female (all white) and a male (dark markings).

They’re all friendly, have never bitten, and are good producers. I’m asking 50 for the lot.

Pineapple w**d.
If you find this amazing smelling little gem in your yard, driveway or out on the trails… pick some (it smells like sweet pineapple!) and make a tea with it tonight before bed. Add a leaf or two of sage (especially if you are in menopause in any of its stages) and let it steep for 8-10 minutes COVERED (either with a saucer or cup lid of some sort to hold the aromatic goodness in). Add a little sweetener of your choice (I use unpasteurized honey) and sip away.
It is very good at helping you relax into a nice, deep, comfortable sleep. 😴 I tried it last night and I could feel the tension leaving my body after sipping about halfway through and I slept better than I have for awhile. You won’t regret it. ☺️
I’ve picked a bunch of pineapple w**d, sage and mint and am dehydrating it for teas during the winter. 😋
