We are very thankful that this cow waited until after the snow storm to have her calf! This cow is a great momma - she calves quickly, is a good protector, and her calf is one of the heaviest at weaning time every year.

The deadline for ordering Covers & Community individual seed is Wednesday, April 15. These are great for intercropping, making your own blends, or even planting happy sunflowers around the yard 🌻

If you’re interested in ordering Covers annual, biannual, or perennial blends, we recommend ordering sooner rather than later. A few blends have been very popular this year, and inventory is starting to get low.

I am married to a very creative guy. He sees a need (or something that can be improved upon), creates a plan in his head, and somehow makes it come to life while working in the garage.

Jason’s latest contraption? A scratching post for the cows. With spring coming (eventually), all the animals are looking for a spot to scratch the itches and work out their shedding winter coats. Jason made this to fit on an existing bale feeder. The treads on the tire give lots of scratching places, even the calves can get in a little back scratch at this height!

Joe gives us a few ways to decrease farm inputs - who doesn’t want to lower that fertilizer bill? We began slowly implementing some of these practices on our farm a few years ago, and have seen good results!

While feeding cows this weekend I had to turn down the temp and fan in the skidsteer from “blazing hot” to “nice and toasty”.

Now the big question: do I feel cautiously optimistic about spring arriving, or wait 2 days for the weather to go right back to winter?

Cows have interesting herd dynamics. The older cows leave their calves with a younger herd member (usually an unsuspecting bred heifer). They proceed to go hang out at the watering bowl or have a Ladies’ Lunch. And said babysitter is stuck with all the calves until the others decide to come back for pick-up. I admit, it’s pretty much a bovine daycare setup!

For those of you who raise animals - do other livestock do this as well?

Here’s the reveal of what was on the trailer yesterday: a John Deere 4640!

This tractor was purchased brand new by my (Avery’s) dad in 1981. It was mainly used for field work, seeding with a box drill, combining (back in the pull-type combine days), and pulling the beet digger. Because it came from irrigation country, it has a 3 point hitch and row crop duals on the back.

We are very excited to have a piece of my family’s history on our farm! I spent a lot of hours growing up in this tractor, and can’t wait to hop back in the driver’s seat this spring.

A huge thank-you goes out to CB Trucking ltd for bringing the 4640 from the balmy plains of southern AB to the winter wonderland of NE Sask! If you need equipment hauled, we highly recommend fellow Sask resident Chris and his crew. They were great to work with, and did an excellent job!
