Do you crave both mental and physical agility? Is your mid-summer ambition starting to run out?

Well, the ground beef we have on offer once contained all of these traits. This cow escaped from the trailer while dropping her off at The Outback Butcher. She had proven herself to be speedy and mentally on-point as we chased her around the south side of Carrot River.

Take a bite into a lean ground beef burger, casserole, or taco. Taste the boldness and determination of a cow who refused to keep her appointment time.

15 lb minimum
$9/lb for 40 lbs +
$9.50/lb for 15-39 lbs
Pickup at our farm, delivery may be made for a small fee

We will be hosting our annual field day next week! There will be fields with Covers & Community annual and perennial blends, as well as various intercrops.

This was our first year going to Ag in Motion, and it was a great experience. We only wish that we had more time to check stuff out - a day isn’t nearly enough!

Our highlight was getting to meet Welker Farms Inc, Red E, and CB Trucking ltd at the Pillar Lasers Inc. booth! And of course, we got to catch up with the crew at the Covers & Community booth!

The thing that struck me was the mix of old and new equipment - there were brand new air drills and the ol’ Big Bud in the same booth. Over at Versatile, they had tractors from both the 1960’s and 2026, side by side. There were antique tractor pulls taking place beside the new equipment that towered above the former “big tractors” of yesteryear. It’s crazy to see how big the equipment has gotten in the short span of 60 years!

Did anybody else go to Ag in Motion this year? If so, what was your favorite part?

We’ve been able to attend some cool learning opportunities this summer! The Horizons Gathering took place at Axten Farms in July. The event had a focus on regenerative agriculture, with several workshops on incorporating it into your farm, business, garden, and lifestyle.

The keynote speaker was Gabe Brown - one of the pioneers of modern-day regenerative farming, and author of “Dirt to Soil”. Amazing meals were provided by Bud's BBQ Food Truck, which incorporated local and regeneratively grown food. The event was very well run and organized, and family friendly as well!

July has been busy over here! Between farm projects, baling, attending a couple of farm events, and trying not to melt in this heatwave, it’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of the month!
Over the next couple of days, we’ll show you some of the cool sights and places we’ve been to. What have you been up to in July?

This is a year of experimenting for us. With us starting to sell bagged feed grains this spring, we wanted to add barley to the future product list.

Because barley tends to be an early maturing grain, we wanted to combine the barley for grain, and use the straw for fall feed. The plan is to use a straw buncher on the combine, which puts the straw into piles so the feed stays above any potential snow. This field can be used while we wait for the corn (a typically longer maturing grain) to finish growing.

As we strive to incorporate intercropping into our farm, we decided to plant fenugreek with the barley. Being a legume, it would add some protein and diversity to the straw.

Pictured below are the two seeds we used - fenugreek is on the left, barley is on the right. Seeing the difference in seed shapes is pretty cool, with fenugreek’s square corners and barley’s elongated diamond shape.

We’ll see how this mix turns out, both with combining and feeding the straw!

This is a first for us - growing corn! We are going to try fall/winter grazing a forage corn/hairy vetch intercrop.

The corn is high in energy, and the hairy vetch has protein, so the two together should produce a fairly balanced diet (and we can supplement with bales as needed).

This photo shows just a few of my chore crew of random critters:

- Senior toothless horse Red patiently eating his extra groceries (not shown - fellow senior horse Tuff wishing that he didn’t have teeth, so he could also get extra groceries)

- Corgi cross Tommy hoping that he could ride in the side-by-side, but settling for leftover oats that fall out of Red’s mouth

- “Diesel Dave” the chicken, the lone survivor when a fox raided our coops this spring. He likes to help Tommy clean up Red’s scraps

We are very thankful that this cow waited until after the snow storm to have her calf! This cow is a great momma - she calves quickly, is a good protector, and her calf is one of the heaviest at weaning time every year.
