We’re so glad we can help this excellent program that helps in training young people but as well helping keep the river environmentally safe and well cared for. It is so great to see the Coho Salmon coming up the Little River.

Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC)
is a youth employment program that pays youth (17-30) a living wage while giving them experience in climate action, and supporting climate action projects in the community. This year in Courtenay YCCBC has focused on habitat restoration, increasing food security, collecting ecological data, and engaging the community. One of the habitat restoration projects YCCBC was involved with this fall was a salmon stream enhancement day on Ellie's Christmas Tree Farm & RV Sites. Here the crew helped Little River Enhancement Society volunteers pull invasive reed canary grass that was blocking the stream, making it more difficult for salmon to make their way upriver to spawn. The youth learned about the importance of removing stream blockages for the annual salmon migration, as well as other stream qualities that are important for salmon, such as gravel stream bottoms appropriate for redds, stream flow, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. The YCCBC team has also been doing water quality monitoring around the Comox Valley, so this was an interesting connection to the importance of the parameters we have been monitoring throughout the season. Being involved with so many organizations doing different but related work has been really interesting and of huge benefit to both the youth and the organization. The knowledge sharing that has occurred has helped the youth think about similar problems in different ways, and helped to improve practices across organizations. This experience at Ellie's Christmas Tree Farm is no different, and gave the youth an opportunity to practice their skills in a different environment, as well as deepen their understanding of the importance of all the work that we are doing. Thank you to Dave & Janine for being open to this work on their Christmas Tree Farm!
