Working with hydroponics is exciting and can be very challenging at times, a lot of what we learned is self taught and YouTube videos, but what a lot of the resources don't tell you is just how messy it can get at times.
The fun part of hydroponics is planting or sowing the seeds and watching it all grow so fast and then comes the harvesting, that's the exciting part. But the not so glamours part is the clean up. Cleaning the channels that the plants grow in and the water tubes that feed the channels. That's where a lot of the work comes into play. We spend hours every week ensuring the grow channels are ready for the seedlings because the reaction of the sunlight and the lettuce sauce create an algae that can block the feeding tubes and prevent the seedlings from accessing the vital nutrients and water it needs to grow.
We don't use any chemicals during our cleaning process just a good abrasive sponge and some elbow grease and the channels are ready again. We also don't use any insecticides or pesticides on our lettuce either as this is just the opposite of why we grow healthy food. We want it to be as natural as possible, just how nature intended. So we don't find the occasional bug while harvesting but they're harmless. Nonetheless though it's also a good practice to wash your lettuce before consuming.
